Week 3 Context Research Presentation- Bianca Patel

Alabama, Spring 1965 was a polarizing time of racism and equal rights in the United States with the severe segregation faced by African Americans living in Alabama. For this week’s readings, John Lewis’ March: Book 1 and Martin Luther King Jr’s “Letter From A Birmingham Jail”, the setting in both these pieces sets up the significant timeline with the “March” on Selma feeding into the cataclysmic “Letter” by MLK in a few months.

In January of 1965, MLK decided that Selma, Alabama would be the ideal location for his national protest when seven out of eight blacks were disenfranchised after extensive literacy tests, making the voter population 99 percent white voters. However, in February, after the ban of literacy tests, in nearby Marion, Alabama, police responded violently to a protest and shot twenty-six year old Jimmie Lee Jackson while he was protecting his mother. His death was a major push to plan a march from Selma to Montgomery. 

The governor of Alabama along with the police force and state troopers set up a barricade on the Edmund Pettus Bridge to stop the march. Six hundred protestors set out on their path on Sunday, March 7th, towards Montgomery. Crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the protestors met the barricade and were told to disperse. John Lewis was at the head of the march, remembering the protestors weren’t going to back down and were going to continue to stand their ground. Lewis recalls getting down to pray when he was attacked by a trooper, and the attacks on the protestors continued; the event later referred to as “Bloody Sunday”. Protests in solidarity with the Selma marchers broke out throughout the country, followed by four thousand people joining MLK in Selma two weeks after Bloody Sunday and marching successfully to the Alabama State Capitol. 

MLK later led a “Good Friday Demonstration” on April 12th without an official permit, where he was arrested. His friend was able to get a copy of the Birmingham Newspaper, where religious leaders had condemned him and his demonstration. In confinement, King was able to write his famous “Letter From A Birmingham Jail”. 

The chain of events in Alabama, Spring 1965 was a key part in moving the Civil Rights Movement forward. The readings for this week will directly include these significant events in more detail to understand the activism of John Lewis and Martin Luther King Jr.

    Great analysis on this week’s material. Comparing the events in Spring of 1965 in Birmingham Alabama to the events that happened in Spring of 2020 seem to be very similar. Activist today are inspired by the leadership of John Lewis and MLK and applied their activism to the protests that are happening today after the death of the beloved George Floyd. Activist like MLK and John Lewis not only provided character trust (repeated experiences of performing the actions that you said you would) , but they lead with their heart and lead by faith. Putting their lives at risk to help future African Americans like myself experience equal opportunities and live up to their full potential is touching. It is their impact that they had on the community that matters. Their legacy will last a lifetime.

    Looking back at our societies history, it’s incredible to see the progress that has been made in regards to racial discrimination. I completely agree that recent protests in support of the BLM movement have been strikingly similar to how previous activists, MLK for example, pushed for equality. While society still has many improvements to make, the insight you provided exemplified how we can come together to push for change.

    I think that there are many similarities to the current protests and the protests of 1965. Both protests were kicked off by the unjust death of a member of the black community, and both were responses to being treated unfairly by those in power, whether that be from being barred to vote or police brutality. While I think that as a society we have come forward quite a bit, it is quite saddening that these protests have so many similarities 55 years later.

    I like the way you connected the events involving Lewis with the events involving King. In school, I never learned as much about Lewis as I did Martin Luther King Jr. I think it is important to learn about multiple civil rights activist leaders and your summaries about both were a good look into this week’s readings. Also, learning about multiple leaders from the past can help our society today learn from them and their successes.

    I think you did a very good job highlighting important events of the Civil Rights Movement. A lot of what I read in your post was new information to me, because the Civil Rights Movement isn’t taught very well in schools. There isn’t a more important time to learn more about the protests of the past than right now, however. We’ve come a long way since the 60s, but there is still much more work to be done.

    I think your expression is very good. You have connected the two leaders of the affirmative action movement in your own way. I had never even heard of Lewis before, and I has no idea how much he had contributed to society. The march started because of the deaths of black people, but I think it was more of a pent-up resistance. With the progress of the society, such events are less and less, but the affirmative action does make great contributions to human beings.

    I found your presentation to be very informative about the protests that went on during the civil rights movement. Personally, I have not heard the story you told, as these stories weren’t really taught to me in school. It was very intriguing to read about the protests MLK led throughout Alabama, which eventually led to major reform movements that allowed black people to have voting rights in our nation.

    Great job giving historical context to help us put the readings into perspective. It’s so disheartening to think about the current state of our country; many of the events from the Civil Rights movement are still taking place, over 50 years later. There are a lot of necessary conversations and protests happening here and now, but it’s unfortunate that our country still faces such a high level of injustice in the year 2020. The historical events you mentioned are heavy. They are hard to read about, but when you step back and put that time period in perspective with the present, it’s shocking to see the similarities of the abuse and brutality. Hopefully soon, reading about things like this will not be relatable to our country’s current state.

    I really enjoyed reading your presentation and think it was very informative. You did a really good connecting the book by John Lewis and the letter by MLK. It is crazy to think that these events and protests that took place were only about 50 years ago. Many of the people alive today have lived through that time period and experienced it. Also today, the many ongoing protests around the United States for many of the same reasons. I wonder what the people alive during the Civil Rights period think about the protests going on now.

  10. Bianca, you did a very good job with your analysis for these readings. It’s very upsetting that we can still see similarities with the brutality or even that there still needs to be protests for equality. I feel like as a society we have come a long way with equality but we are no where near where we need to be. I’m sure it is very saddening for the people that lived through the protests back in the 1960’s to see very similar things happening still today. While these events are hard to read about, I feel they are very important and wish they were taught more in school.

    I thought your post was very informative and helpful in giving background information about this weeks readings. In school, the civil rights movement is taught every year but it is never enough information to truly understand the extent to which the civil rights movement went. I also like how you connect the two authors together because I didn’t know much about Lewis until I read your post. I also think that there are many parallels between the protests that occurred in the sixties and the protests that are happening now. It’s frankly appalling to think about the fact that 55 years later there are still many reforms that need to be made that should have been reformed years ago.

It was very helpful in understanding the context of the text after knowing the historical background and series of event that occurred. Also I never really knew to what extent the black community had been victim to violence during the protests. Through knowing these facts I was able to understand the context better and try to relate to the emotions that Lewis or Dr,MLK Jr. was trying to express within the text.

I have obviously learned about MLK jr. in school growing up but, I had never heard of Lewis before. I also think there are a lot of similarities in the protests back then and the BLM protests

  16. This is so interesting! I never really knew who John lewis was before this week’s discussion but he is a truly amazing American figure. It would take so much courage to be at the front of that march. It is amazing how after this moment in time hundreds of solidarity protests broke out over the country. This really shows how one courageous act can change the coarse for a whole movement. Wheat I really still don’t get is how MLK was arrested for a peaceful protest with the use of a valid police permit. I also find it amazing how his letter was so nice after what our government did to him.
