Diary of Systemic Injustices

One injustice that has always stuck out to me is the pay gap between men and women. This is a major deal that has been brought up multiple times, for multiple jobs. But, one of the most recent ones was about a year ago between the U.S. women’s and men’s soccer teams. The women stood up for themselves and demanded to get paid the same amount the men’s team gets paid. During this time, the men’s team never won a World Cup, and the women’s team won their fourth. The women were fighting for equality for some time prior to the World Cup, but the World Cup just emphasized what they were fighting for. This just shows that the women have put in the same or even more work into winning their games, but somehow get paid way less. This is just one example of how this is happening in the world. This can happen anywhere, especially in bigger corporations. This pay gap between the soccer teams can be traced back to the very beginning. According to ESPN, “they are contractually required to play, women’s team players would each earn a maximum of $99,000 ($4,950 per game), and men’s team players would earn $263,320 ($13,166 per game). The suit also states that from 2013 to 2016, women players earned $15,000 for making the national team, and the men earned $55,000 in 2014 and $68,750 in 2018. (In response to this, U.S. Soccer told ESPN that these figures were pulled from the old collective bargaining agreement, and a new one was signed in 2017.)” This not only sets an example for equality between men and women, but it also shows how women are powerful figures and can do anything they put their mind to. I also think this is a great example of how times are changing and people are standing up for equality throughout the world. This is also a great example of how famous people, or professional sports players, will use their platform to fight and make a stand for those who cannot.
