The Commodity Chain of a Chocolate Bar

The production of a chocolate bar or other chocolate products involves a chain of production with many stages.

It all starts with the cocoa bean farmers and ends with the consumer. There are many stages between the cocoa farmer and the consumer. Some stages in the commodity chain include: farmers, cooperatives, manufacturing, retailers and consumers.

At each stage of the chain there are additional services that are needed to transform the cocoa bean into the chocolate we enjoy. These include transportation, packaging, banking and insurance and sales and marketing.
