Coffee roasters

Coffee roasters make the highest profit in the coffee chain. That is surprising to me because coffee importers play the most important role in this commodity chain, but they don’t necessarily make the most profit. Coffee roasters on the other hand, mostly rely on importers because of the green beans importers hold, but they still make more money. Many roasters need to get the coffee from the importers because they usually cannot obtain quality beans on their own, and the importers are the ones who decide what types of green beans are to be sold.

Number of coffee roasters in U.S. is 1200. Among them, large roasters hold 60% of total green bean volume. They usually have one blend of recipes, and they sell their roasted coffee beans to large retailers like Kraft and Procter & Gamble. On the other hand, micro-roasters, who sometimes sell around 500 bags of coffee a year, make specialty coffee.
