Preservation

Description:

One of salt’s biggest uses is preservation. Salt can absorb moisture, which in turn prevents bacteria and mold from growing. The two main functions of salt that make it useful for preserving food are that it dries food and it kills microbes. Salt draws water out of food and dehydrates it. This means that living things will not be able to grow because of the absence of water. Salt is also toxic to most microbes. The salt changes the pressure in water of the organism which causes many microbes to rupture.

Social Impact:

The preservation of salt allows food to be able to last longer. This means that people are able to save food which can ultimately save a considerable amount of money for people. Instead of having to throw away extra food after dinner, people can save it to eat for another meal. Many American families eat leftovers continuously throughout the week. That money saved can then be used to buy other necessities which can improve a person’s way of living.
