Module 7: Maintaining Motivation

  • What is the most useful thing I learned in this module?

The most useful thing from this module was the Module 7 slideshow discussing how to boost your academic confidence while also staying on task.  It talks about how to prevent distractions while working or studying.  If one is able to eliminate distractions in his/her environment, they are putting themselves in a position to succeed.

  • What is a specific example of something from this module I have already put into practice? How did it work out?

One thing I have already begun to put into practice is blocking out distractions while I do homework or when I study. This has benefited me tremendously because I am more focused and determined to finish my work.  Before I began to work on this skill set, I used to try to work through distractions to finish my work; I now realize that I do not have to do this.

  • What ideas from this module could I put into practice in the future? How?

An important idea that I should keep into my mind in the future is maintaining strong confidence for my academics. I know that there will be times where class and school will become stressful.  Nonetheless, now that I know how to deal with this while staying focused, it will allow me to be academically successful.

  • What advice would I give to students (or working professionals), based on what I’ve read or experienced during this module?

Maintain a strong study and work habit; do not get off task and fall behind. It is important to make goals for yourself as one continues their academic studies at OSU.

Module 6: Searching and Researching

  • What is the most useful thing I learned in this module?

The most useful thing I learned from this module was having the opportunity to go back and look at resources that have benefited my academics.  This assignment allowed me to save resources that I found helpful which will ultimately be very useful as I continue my courses at Ohio State.

  • What is a specific example of something from this module I have already put into practice? How did it work out?

One thing I have come across that I now keep in the back of my head is when I find a helpful academic resource online, I immediately add it to my files for school.  This strategy allows me to come back to these resources when I need them for other courses or if I forget the name of one of them. Preparing yourself for future help is something everyone should do.

  • What ideas from this module could I put into practice in the future? How?

I want to start recognizing when I find a beneficial academic resource.  It is important to provide yourself with as many resources as you can so you will not fall behind.  Because without having go-to sources for studying, work, and etc, it will be harder to complete course work. However, a hard work ethic should be implemented within each and every technique an individual does.

  • What advice would I give to students (or working professionals), based on what I’ve read or experienced during this module?

Always be open-minded when it comes to allowing yourself to improve your academic work. Even if a teacher or person is lecturing you about your work, always listen and be positive.

Module 5: Web-Enhanced Listening and Viewing Strategies

    • What is the most useful thing I learned in this module?

The most useful thing I was able to take into account was the new note-taking strategies by Indiana University. How I take notes now is good, but being able to see other forms of note-taking strategies will allow me to take notes based on the information from my lecture; it is always good to have different note-taking forms so you are able to retain information quicker.

    • What is a specific example of something from this module I have already put into practice? How did it work out?

One thing I have already put into practice is the different listening techniques I learned from the module. I have incorporated recognizing keywords into my note-taking habits. Because of this, I can have more useful notes and not have too much irrelevant information that ends up not helping me. Now, anytime I read or listen to my lecturers, I key in on the important information.

    • What ideas from this module could I put into practice in the future? How?

I could put into place the different variety of note-taking strategies for my future classes. As of right now, the notes I take are benefiting me nicely. However, as I get in further into my later year courses at OSU, incorporating new note-taking strategies will be very helpful. Furthermore, courses are going to become harder since I am a business major in Fisher, pushing myself to retain class information is going to become a must.

    • What advice would I give to students (or working professionals), based on what I’ve read or experienced during this module?

Always be open to allowing your studying and note-taking techniques to be improved. Anyone and everyone can push themselves further in terms of their academics.

This is a good resource to check out if you are interested in improving your note-taking techniques.

Module 4: Web-Enhanced Reading and Study Strategies

  • What is the most useful thing I learned in this module?

The most useful information I have come across during Module 4 is the fact that I can further improve my memorization skills before tests, quizzes, and exams. I had always assumed how I study and memorize my class material now, was perfectly good the way it was. However, after watching the videos and reading about how to improve upon memory in general, it made me realize there is always room for improvement in anyone’s academics.

  • What is a specific example of something from this module I have already put into practice? How did it work out?

After completing the “Best of the Web” assignment, I was able to take into account all the information I had come across. I was able to see that there are many online resources out there that I can take advantage of for studying for my academics. For example, Symbolab was a resource that stood out to me since it offers many ways to complete math problems and equations for my math classes.

  • What ideas from this module could I put into practice in the future? How?

Since I was able to come across Symbolab, I am going to push myself to use this resource as I study and work on homework for my current math course at Ohio State, Business Statistics. Symbolab allows me to understand other ways to attack problems so that I can work around difficult questions that are thrown my way before test day.

  • What advice would I give to students (or working professionals), based on what I’ve read or experienced during this module?

If you think your studying skills and habits are perfect the way they are now, I encourage you to stay open-minded since you can come across many useful types of resources to help with your academics. Nonetheless, you should always strive to achieve the best grade possible.

Module 3: Efficiency in the Digital Age

  • What is the most useful thing I learned in this module?

The most useful thing I learned in this module is understanding and using Google Calendar. This has really helped me acknowledge I have flaws with mentally scheduling my week. The problem with this is that I can lose track of things and also get behind on homework. Google Calendar allows me to stay organized.

  • What is a specific example of something from this module I have already put into practice? How did it work out?

I have already been continuing to use the Google Calendar as it allows me to stay more organized with my school work and day to day non-school related activities. Ever since I began being more alert and plugging my schedules into Google Calendar, I have not missed a single assignment or online quiz.  Also, Google will send you notifications, if you allow it to, and it will keep up to date of what is on your schedule.

  • What ideas from this module could I put into practice in the future? How?

I think some really important ideas from this module to consider is why we procrastinate and how we each individually can attack our procrastination. Understanding the possible ways I procrastinate is what I want to work on in the future. If I am able to see the ways I lose attention and focus from my work, I can be more productive overall when I work. I will start taking into account how long and how I procrastinate while I study and work; identifying the flaws can help fix them.

  • What advice would I give to students (or working professionals), based on what I’ve read or experienced during this module?

We all have different strategies while we work and study. If you are looking to work on your studying skills, I would recommend identifying your flaws first before trying to improve yourself in this path. Being patient is important to factor during this process.

  • At least one reference to a specific idea from a reading, resource, or video in this week’s lessons. Include a link to the original source in your post.

I would go back and check out the lesson module 3 slides/videos and closely focus on what you are able to personally connect with the most.

Module 2: Communicating and Collaborating

  • What is the most useful thing I learned in this module?

The most important thing I have learned from this module is that I was able to focus more in-depth about my strengths and weaknesses in my time management.  Because I am so far into my academic career by being at Ohio State, I just assumed I had strong time management and gave little thought into it. The time management test was very helpful in determining what I needed to work on. By looking at your results, it goes in-depth on your score for each section. The information it provides gives a different perspective on that time management aspect, ultimately giving you more thought about my own time skills. Above all, being able to fully understand my strengths and weaknesses for time management is something everyone should consider.

  • What is a specific example of something from this module I have already put into practice? How did it work out?

One thing I have already put into use is working on my new technique for schedule planning. Since I was able to see that I could further work on my scheduling, I have been immediately recording my work for classes as I am in lecture instead of writing it down later in the day. During this whole process, I was able to conclude that by writing out my workload during class, I was able to save myself time later in the day.  As I finally sat down to begin my work in my dorm, I could take out my planner and follow along my “To-Do List”. This process has been quite a benefit for me, I feel more organized and eager to do my work when I finish classes for the day. After realizing the positive impacts this adjustment has had on me, I now pay attention to what else specifically I am able to improve on.

  • What ideas from this module could I put into practice in the future? How?

Without a doubt, taking into account the time management test results is something I am to apply to my academic life now and for the future. This test provides your weaknesses and strengths; giving insightful messages about your results/score.

  • What advice would I give to students (or working professionals), based on what I’ve read or experienced during this module?

I recommend always being willing to work on yourself and being open-minded. There is always room for improvement as a student.

  • Regardless of the types of questions you respond to or format you choose, be sure to make at least one specific reference to a page number or quote from the readings each week.

I recommend checking out the “How Good Is Your Time Management?” test by looking at its messages based on your performance at the end of the page more in-depth; it really does provide good information. This is a good resource for students to improve upon their time management skills.
