Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

A few weeks ago I volunteered for a toy adaption project with AEP. This project aimed to put college students and AEP employees together to adapt toys in a way that they would be usable to those with special needs. This was a good opportunity for me to serve the community, make connections with those in the engineering field, and work on my skills as an engineer. I worked with my roommate, Kevin, and a woman from AEP.  We were successful in our attempt to adapt the toy, and I felt like I accomplished my goals in the service activity.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Artifacts

This is my MyIntent bracelet. This bracelet reminds me that even when things are hard, and I get stressed, that I should live in the moment and make the best of it. This is especially important to me because I fight my anxiety on the daily, and I need to be reminded of the good things in life. This keeps me focused on why I am here. To learn as much about myself and the world around me as I can to best serve me in the future,  and my future career. It also helps me look back at all my past experiences and everything that brought me here, and to be proud of this. That is why I chose it as my first artifact.

About Me

My name is Matthew Colvin, but people usually just call me “Matt.” I was born August 9th, 1999 in St. Anne’s Hospital in Westerville. I lived the first 19 years of my life in Pickerington, Ohio, which is a suburb of Columbus about 25 minutes from Campus. I was always a musically-inclined person, picking up piano at 8 years old (I took lessons for 8 years), drums at 14, and guitar at 17. I’d like to do something with music in college, even if it’s just taking a few classes or forming a casual band with friends. I went to high school at Pickerington North High School, and was involved in the drumline and a few clubs. I excelled in math and science, with math being my favorite subject. Since I was good at these two subjects, and with my parents both being computer engineers, it was only natural that engineering was the field for me.  I am a first-year engineering student at the Ohio State University. I plan on majoring in Mechanical Engineering, but I’m open to other fields of engineering if another one ends up popping out at me. Since my parents both did computer engineering, I always wanted to do something different. Physics ended up being the deciding class behind my decision, because I liked the application of science to movement and how things work. I’d like to work in the automotive or marine vehicle industries, as I think there is a lot of work to be done there when it comes to designing vehicles that are more efficient, and, in the future, run on renewable or more sustainable energy. Overall, I’m just a kid looking to provide his unique skillset to better the world in anyway I can.
