Year in Review

College is a challenging time. College makes you lose yourself in order to find yourself; it makes you realize what true hard work and dedication can do; and it makes you notice just how important the little things are in life. But most of all, college has helped me grow into the person I have always wanted to be.

This year by far has been one of the most challenging years of my life. Along with a heavy course load, I have gotten a job on campus, maintained involvement in International Affairs, and gained a leadership position in Chi Omega Fraternity. I have had to forgo social free time in order to finish that last assignment or study for an upcoming exam time and time again.  I have had to make the decision to graduate early and get my first real internship this summer working in the higher education department. Overall, I’ve done a lot of growing up.

But I don’t regret doing any of those things. Along with the struggles to prioritize everything, I have had some really great memories this year. I got to attend every home football game;  I have grown closer to my friends, who have been nothing but supportive of me; and probably made one too many late-night milkshake runs.

This year has really helped me realize who I am and allowed me to accept and be happy for who I am. I feel like I am finally comfortable with myself and am excited to take on whatever life throws my way.

G.O.A.L.S.

Being part of the Honors and Scholars program has always been a “goal” of mine. Apart from my desire to follow in my sister’s footsteps, this program has enriched my experience at The Ohio State University by allowing me to cultivate unbeatable leadership skills and engage in community service opportunities.

Leadership is something I take very seriously. At a young age I realized that the world has leaders and followers and I preferred the former. Today, I try to take a leadership role in all of my extracurricular activities. For example, in high school, I was my tennis team captain. I also take pride in participating in Student Government. I was heavily invoved in Student Government in high school and remain involved today in college on the Sustainability Committee. I have always been driven to make the world the best place it can be and change will not take place unless someone is there to take the reins. Leadership Development is something I enjoy being involved in at Ohio State. More specifically I have found my place in Greek Life. I have accepted the role of Foundations Ambassador for my sorority and have enjoyed the responsibilities that come with it.

Another G.O.A.L. I’m passionate about is Service Engagement. Along with leadership, many of my school clubs and activities revolve around volunteer work. My parents sparked my interest in community service at a young age. I can remember helping my parents pick out clothes and toys for the Good Samaritan organization around Thanksgiving time and even driving all around my county to deliver food to elderly people through Meals on Wheels. Those experiences shaped my life and made me realize how fortunate I am. As I became older I discovered my own way to get involved. In high school I joined Key Club and was initiated into National Honor Society. Both clubs involve service hours, such as volunteer work and tutoring. As a part of my service to the community, I set up and ran school fairs, seated families at graduations, assisted children in elementary schools, and organized blood drives. Out of all my times volunteering, never once have I felt that my time was wasted. The feeling I received after making someone’s day, just by taking some time to help out is unbeatable.

Being a part of The Ohio State University Honors and Scholars program has made my time spent on campus that much more meaningful.

To me, Chi O is more than just a sorority. It is a group of girls that are not only there for me whenever I need them, but push me to be my personal best everyday. Once I joined Chi O, I could tell I truly found my place in college. I was surrounded my girls who I knew would be my friends for life and would only have a positive impact on my life.

Education is an artifact that has a little different of a meaning to me. I am not referring to college or my education history specifically but rather my future in the educational field. My plan is to work for the federal or state government working to “fit the puzzle pieces” of education together in order to create a quality education for everyone. I want to rework the current way we allocate funding. I believe I am passionate about this career path because of my experiences with education.

Graduation to me is so much more than getting a diploma. In high school it meant I got to start a new chapter in my life in a new state, meeting new people, and making new friends. When I graduate college, it will mean that I get to start my life and pursue my passion.

Christianity has been a huge part of my life growing up. I have had to push myself to to attend church and keep in touch with my faith, especially since going to college. In doing so, I have found the best version of myself–a version that pushes me to get out of bed in the morning and make the best of each day.

The Ohio Student Education Policy Institute (OSEPI) is more than just an event I participated in. It is what kick started my path towards a career in education policy. This program showed me how much I care about education and how much I want to change it for the better. Writing a white paper and getting to testify in front of the State Fiscal Committee in spring of 2015 is something I will never forget. I gained so much real world experience from this program and I am so thankful for the opportunity to have attended it.

Without my two older sisters, I would not be where I am today. First of all, I would most likely not be attending Ohio State. If I hadn’t visited my oldest sister here and fell in love with the college, I would have most likely stayed in state and gone to Purdue or Indiana University. My sisters have also pushed my academically. They are both incredible smart and I always strived to achieve as much as they did. They also were exceptional role models/mentors to me growing up. They let me know when I was messing up and they celebrated with me when I achieved my goals. They have loved me unconditionally and without their support, I would not be where I am today.
