Year in Review

Thus far, this year has been quite the roller coaster.

Before college, I would generally say that I was a reserved individual. I did not know exactly what I wanted out of life, all I knew that I wanted was to be successful and the ability to provide. I knew no idea how I was going to get there, I only saw the end goal. However, college definitely changed this train of thought. Thus far, through failure, success, new opportunities, and many new friendships, I have learned that although the end goal may be in sight it is imperative that one must be prepared for what is about to come. One must be prepared for failure and the lack of success/vision. I’ve definitely failed, in my eyes, as both a student and a human being. Be it through not studying enough or not participating enough even though commitments have been made, I have definitely let myself and others down.

However, this is not to say that I cannot learn from these mistakes. I have taken the first step of admitting that I have a problem when it comes to academics and commitments. I realize that I have the next three years to improve on these failures and to ultimately tower over them with success. The end goal of success is of course in sight, however I now see the road of failures and triumphs that must be made to reach this end goal. Through these failures and successes, I will ultimately become a more prepared and unique individual who will learn a great amount about himself. After all, college is supposed to be a learning experience.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I will plan to study abroad later in my academic career, as well as participating in Ohio State’s Jewish Organization, Hillel.

Original Inquiry: I will pursue research in the biological sciences through working in one of the many biological labs on Ohio State’s Campus.

Academic Enrichment: Through my GE courses, major curriculum, and other pre-requisites, I will pursue an original and balanced education. The Biology major will give me a solid, and intellectually stimulating, foundation that will assist me in my pursuit of medical school. My Ge courses of history and philosophy will assist me in truly becoming a “global citizen” as well as enabling me to become more educated in general.

Leadership Development: Through my involvement in sustainability, political, and community service student organizations, I am turly learned how to become a presence on campus. Applying for the Resident Advisor position will also teach me how to become a role model for incoming students as well.

Service Engagement: Through my involvement in student organizations, I will aim to provide service to the areas of Columbus. This will be through participating in BuckeyeThon, providing service opportunities to my residence hall, and providing fresh produce at an affordable price on campus.

Artifacts

This artifact is the very first picture of my dorm room which I took on move-in day. This picture is special to me because it is a snapshot of the very first moment in which I was truly on my own in life. My mother at the time of this picture was most likely driving home, leaving her only son and youngest child in life’s hands.

College has certainly been a learning experience, both in the figurative and literal sense. I have learned a lot about math, chemistry and Spanish, sure. However there is much more beyond these subjects in which I have learned. I have learned to ask myself who I am as a person, what I am good at, what I am bad ag, and what I truly want out of life. Being on my own has been frightening of course, but it has been eye-opening. College has shown myself that I am not nearly as smart as I thought I was, not nearly as prepared as I thought I was, and more importantly I was not who I thought I was. However, the most important lesson from all of this is that I learned that it was OK to question myself. The only way to obtain answers is through asking questions. Therefore, I hope I will ask myself many more questions in the future, and I also hope I will learn a great deal as a result of these questions.

About Me

Nathan Cohen is a freshman, biology major at The Ohio State University. Nathan aims to take full advantage of his four years here at OSU, and he believes utilizing these resources will help him become a more educated and compassionate human being. Although Nathan is unsure about his future plans beyond these four years, he is confident that his time here will nonetheless assist him throughout life. Nathan ultimately sees himself in a science related field, and he will use his education at OSU to provide for himself, others, and most importantly his family. Ultimately Nathan wants to succeed in life, and he wants to live a life without regret and any thoughts of “what if”.

Nathan went to high school in Dayton, OH. However, he has lived in four different states throughout his life, so he does not really identify himself with “a home-town”. As a result, Nathan finds himself to have quite the global mindset. Nathan has experienced a lot through his travels in Jamaica, Israel, Mexico, the mountains of Utah, the “middle of nowhere” of South Carolina, the cornfields of Ohio, and much more. As a result of these experiences, Nathan aims to become a unique and educated individual with an original outlook on life. Since he has many years ahead of him, Nathan hopes to continue his travels to see what the world continues to offer.

Nathan’s interests include computers, the occasional video game, traveling, and philosophy. Nathan has played quite a few sports, including tennis, swimming, and track and field. Although he’s not necessarily the most athletic individual, Nathan values these experiences due to their ability to build teamwork and integrity. Nathan also prides himself in his personality traits as well. Nathan thinks of himself as friendly, comical, and understanding. The most important trait to Nathan is loyalty. Throughout his entire life, Nathan will stick behind his true friends through thick and thin.
