We would like to share a little bit about our Dad, of whom we are immensely proud, for all the things he taught us about helping others and life in general. Here is a brief history.
Warren G. Elliott, Dad, Grandpa, and friend was born April 19, 1921 in Steubenville, Ohio. Spud, as he was known to most was the third of four Elliott children. He was raised on a small working farm. Spud’s Dad was an independent oil and gas well driller in eastern Ohio. Spud worked in the fields along with his two brothers but eventually made the decision to follow his older brother, Jim, to The Ohio State University where they were later joined by their younger brother John. Their father was against the boys leaving the fields to get a college education and offered no support. In addition to their work in the fields the boys worked on the farm, sold eggs, milk, and baked goods door-to-door, to raise money to attend The Ohio State University. Spud received his undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University and continued at Ohio State to graduate from the School of Dentistry.
After graduation he returned to Steubenville, along with his wife, Joyce, and opened a general dentistry practice. He closed the practice in Steubenville to return to school to become an oral surgeon. Spud served in the United States Army Dental Corps during WWII and the Korean War in a MASH Unit. Dr. Elliott chose to pursue his career in Springfield in 1955 where he practiced until his retirement in 1989. Dad enjoyed life and was known by many for his colorful clothing and his ability to tell you exactly what was on his mind. An avid golfer, he also enjoyed flying, taking my sister and me on adventures, and visits with his grandchildren. Spud was active in various service organizations and participated in many charitable causes. He always remained thankful for the way the people had helped him become successful.
Dad would often reflect how grateful he was that his professors had taken the time to help him obtain the skills to practice a trade that allowed him to help people and have a comfortable life. Many people helped him so that he could complete his college education. He spoke many times of the old man that would pick him up every morning to drive him around to sell Fuller Brushes door-to-door so he could afford to go to college. He always said that education was the one thing that no one could ever take away from you.
By establishing the James M. and Warren G. Elliott Scholarship at The Ohio State University School of Engineering to honor his older brother Jim, he hoped to reward others with an opportunity to one day earn a college degree and advance their lives.
We sincerely hope you realize your dreams.
