Hello Fellow Buckeyes,

Max (second one from the right) with his parents, Max and Excy, and siblings in 1993

Congratulations for being recipients of the Max and Excy Scholarship. You and your families should be very proud of your accomplishments and I wish you continued success.

I wanted to share some background about myself, my parents and the reasons I set up this scholarship. I was born and raised in the Philippines and transferred to Ohio State at the end of my freshman year. I chose Ohio State because of its strong Civil Engineering program.

At the start of my Junior year, I was awarded the Lee D Moody Scholarship. It was a tremendous financial help but even more than that it was a great source of pride for me and particularly my parents. That feeling had a lasting impact on me and after my father passed, I told my mother I wanted to set up a scholarship to honor him.

It took some time for me to feel financially settled to establish the scholarship (my mother had also passed by then). It started slowly but over time eventually grew into an endowed scholarship. I always look forward to reading the notes from recipients about how the scholarship has helped them.  Once you’re financially able, I encourage you to consider paying forward to future Buckeyes by donating to Ohio State’s general scholarship fund or setting up a personal scholarship as I’ve done.

Congratulations again and Go Bucks!

FYI, Excy is my mother’s nickname and is pronounced by combining the letters X and C.  My grandparents named her Exaltacion to celebrate their youngest child and only daughter after 3 boys.
