Roy Brenholts was born on August 12, 1886, in Hocking County, Ohio. His father Alfred Brenholts became wealthy as an operator of coal mines in West Virginia and Kentucky, after which the family moved to Columbus. Roy graduated from Ohio State in 1907, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. As a student he was a member of Chi Phi fraternity and Sigma Xi, the honorary fraternity for engineers. He married Peggy Matticks, of Newark, Ohio, on June 16, 1910. They had three children before later divorcing. Roy remarried in 1928 to Sara McIntyre, of Columbus, Ohio. Roy spent his career working for the General Hocking and Coal Company that had been founded by his father, while also expanding into Columbus real estate. He passed away on December 24, 1962, at the age of 76.
