Howard Dwight Smith Scholarship

Established July 9, 1956, by friends. Income provides scholarships in architecture.

The scholarship is named for Howard Dwight Smith (class of 1907) the architect of Ohio Stadium and a professor of architecture from 1918 to1921 and from 1929to 1956 when he also served as university architect. In addition to designing the ‘Shoe, Smith also designed Pomerene Hall, the Faculty Club, Baker Hall, Smith Laboratory, French Field House and St. John Arena. Smith was also known for creating several schools throughout Columbus and the Poindexter Village, one of the nation’s first public housing developments.  Smith passed away in 1958. Shortly after Smith’s death, the Board of Trustees named a new residence hall in his honor.  Smith had five children and one of his granddaughters is the actress Beverly D’Angelo, who is famous for her role in the movies Nation Lampoon’s Vacation and Christmas Vacation.
