Douglas Herr and Jane Maliszewski Endowed Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was established in February 2021 by Doug “Ben” Herr and Jane Maliszewski and is awarded to out-of-state engineering students who are majoring or plan to major in industrial and systems engineering or environmental engineering.

Bio provided by Ben and Jane, September 2024.

Doug “Ben” Herr and Jane F Maliszewski invested in this scholarship because we strongly believe in the value of a good education. Both of us served in, and retired from, the U.S. Army after full careers. Ben as a Logistics Officer with a concentration in Operations Research and Systems Analysis, and Jane as a Signal Officer managing the telecommunications and information systems networks for the military.

While Ben attended West Point (the U.S. Military Academy) and Jane graduated from Rutgers University, we had strong family ties to The Ohio State University. When we moved to Columbus in 2019 to be closer to our aging parents, we decided to fund a scholarship at The Ohio State University College of Engineering highlighting Systems Engineering (Ben’s background) and Environmental Engineering (Jane’s interest).

After Ben retired from the Army, he served as a project and program manager of the U.S. Defense Department’s global RFID (radio frequency identification) logistics network, and then for the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the Department of Homeland Security.  After this 2nd career, Ben turned his interests to fitness, becoming a ACE Certified Health Coach and Personal Trainer and an IRONMAN U Certified Coach,  with an interest in participating in events that challenge human capacity and mental toughness.

In her 2nd career after the Army, Jane trained to become a professional coach and started her own business, VAULT Associates, as an Executive and Life Coach with an expertise in applied neuroscience and change. She works with professionals on ways to manage stress, improve relationships, lead with assertiveness and compassion, and feel more balanced at work and at home. Jane is active in several veteran’s support organizations passionately sharing the practices of mental fitness and resiliency.

Our hope is that this scholarship makes the road to acquiring the expertise and experience to become a giver-back to society just a little bit easier financially.
