Dorothy J. and Herbert L. Fenburr Scholarship Fund

Established December 6, 1985, from his estate. Income assists chemical engineering students in need who have completed three years of college, with preference to students majoring in the chemical coatings or paint industry.

Story provided by old neighbor, Isaac David Cohen, in October 2025.

Dr. Herbert Fenburr (B.Ch.E 1934, M.S. 1935, Ph.D. 1937) was a paint chemist in the private sector for companies such as the National Refining Company and later for the Huron Chemical Corporation. He was a prominent chemical engineer and businessman based in Columbus, Ohio.

He is well-known for being commissioned by the government during WWII to come up with the paint formula battleship gray. To this day, the formula has not changed at all. All battleships are painted in that color.

Dr. Fenburr passed away in 1981 and his wife, Dorothy (Dottie) Fenburr (B.A. 1935) passed away in 2004.
