It’s been a great year so far. Ohio State has been a wonderful place and has treated me such. Juggling classes, clubs, and band has been tough- very glad I didn’t try out for marching band this year. I have learned to temper my expectations of the grades that I’m going to be getting in classes. This is harder than high school. I didn’t get that in the first few weeks, and my grades suffered for it. I’m glad that I realized how much I have t shape up now and not halfway through my junior year. I paced my scientific courses a bit better next semester. With band increasing its hold on my schedule, I’m glad that I have finally learned how to study. It’s better late than never, right?

About Me

Hello all, I’m Megan Coan! I’m pursuing a major in Biology with an interest in a minor or double major in Zoology. I am on the pre-vet track and hope to study exotic animals in the future.

I am currently a member of several extracurricular organizations, including the running club, pre-vet club, and the Columbus Blue Jackets club. I also play trumpet in the Athletic Band. I currently work as a lifeguard at Kalahari Resorts in Sandusky, Ohio

In high school, I was involved in marching band, drama club, cross country, track and field, and swimming for four years. I was the secretary of the band and trumpet section leader for my senior year. I performed with the concert band at the state level for three years. Our drama club also performed shows at the state level for my sophomore and junior year. I volunteered at the Toledo Zoo for five years through the Toledo ZooTeen program from the ages of 13-18. That stretch of time was probably one of the best things to ever happen to me. I learned to speak well, and it was a plus to be able to speak about what I now realize to be my passion. We got into the gritty as well, and I loved every part of it.

As a first year at Ohio State, I haven’t experienced much yet. However, that means there is plenty more to come!

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Endophyte Research

As a freshman, you usually don’t get a chance to do much research, right? Wrong. In my Biology 1114H class, we are currently researching endophytes- fungal creatures that live in between plant cells. My lab partner and I cultured many different types of endophytes from the Eastern Cottonwood tree and American Basswood tree. The Basswood tree can be used for many medicinal purposes, so we decided to see if the Cottonwood tree had any endophyte similarities. We discovered two endophytes that we could for sure categorize, one being a form of penicilium and the other being a disease-causing fungi for plants and humans. Oops. After several weeks of culturing, microscopy, DNA testing, protein testing, and general hard work, we are still writing the paper. No worries, it will be finished soon!

About Me

[Your “About Me” is an introduction and should provide insight into who you are as a person and a learner.  This should include a picture of you that is appropriate in a professional/academic context. This information should be continually updated.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio.  Delete these instructions and add your own post.]
