DSWS Service Hours (AU19)

I was able to get the majority of my service hours through volunteering my time at the Recreation and Physical Activity Center (RPAC) for certain school subjects such as English 1100 or Psychology 1100 through the study tables that were provided. Through volunteering, I was able to offer my services to younger students who may have needed my help. I learned that I could not force people to get help, because there were not a lot of people who showed up to the study tables. I also learned that when people offer to help, I should be willing to take it because they would not be offering it unless they meant it. I would go to the RPAC for two hours at a time (7:00 pm-9:00 pm) on September 22, October 6, October 20, October 27, and November 3. On November 9 from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm I volunteered at a Rowing camp for little kids. This was held at  Griggs Reservoir Boat House. On this day, I was a group leader and I had the job of getting my kids from one station to the next on time. I feel that I learned how to be around kids in a better way because that was something that I sometimes struggled with. I also think that I learned how to manage my time because I had to have the kids get to certain stations on time. I feel that I was also able to develop better leadership skills because I had to direct the kids where to go, and I usually am not the one to tell people where to go. This camp helped me to develop foundational skills that will be applicable to group projects or even directing older people. I feel that these service opportunities have allowed me to become more flexible and be able to manage certain roles in an efficient manner.

On August 26th from 9:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m I went to a workout and in patient care company that dealt with patients who just got out of chemotherapy or radiation called H.E.R.O (Health and Exercise Rehabilitation in Oncology). The Wexner Center recommends this business because it gets the patients motivated to be fit and well again. After the effects of therapy, it leads people to become tired and fatigued. H.E.R.O Cancer Health Team takes people through a light workout to get a fitness plan and from there on the patients come in on scheduled days to workout with the team. I loved being there because I felt that I belonged in that type of atmosphere. I learned that I love helping people with fitness advice or what to do for workouts and being here enabled me to do those activities. Volunteering here made me realize that I want to help people in the health field and always do something with fitness. I felt that I could take initiative with the patients and discuss certain remedies for any injury they were dealing with. Because of this experience, it positively impacted me as a leader by connecting me to people who have the same common goal as me. Because of service learning I am more confident in what I want to do with my future career. (https://www.herocancerhealth.com/)

I went to the Indianola school here in Columbus during one of the first volunteer opportunities. It was held on August 25th from 11:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m. Some of the Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholars students and I went to this school and we helped weed, mulch, and collect some of the fruits and vegetables that the school was growing. I thoroughly enjoyed helping out because the adults who ran the event appreciated our help. It made me extremely happy that the group and I could accomplish a lot for the adults and do most of the heavy labor so they would not have to. I learned that I love to do work that is not enjoyable so others do not have to. I was able to improve my leadership by helping the other volunteers know where and what to do with the mulch and the weeds. I feel that I can work better with people my own age and lead them in a responsible way. Because of service learning I have developed a better sense of communication. In October of this year, I had the chance to volunteer at the Columbus Marathon on the 21st from 7:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m. I helped with setting up the tables, pouring the gatorade into the cups, and handing out the cups to the runners as they went by. I loved being able to encourage the runners because I felt I could relate to them when I am enduring a tough workout because I like when people encourage me. I loved being able to interact with the community. I loved having the sense of belonging that I had when I was out because I got to see a lot of people come together for a common purpose. I learned that I like motivating people when they need it the most. This opportunity helped me as a leader because I learned what it was like to be apart of an event that was bigger than myself. I learned that in order to be a leader, I have to know what it is like to do the jobs that are not as enjoyable or be in conditions that are not the best. Because of service learning I am more willing to go wherever my services are needed the most. (http://www.columbusmarathon.com/)

On March 3, 2019 from 8:45am-7:00pm I volunteered at the Greater Columbus Convention Center to help with the USA Weightlifting American Open. I assisted in cleaning up any unnecessary equipment that the athletes did not need. I assisted in helping people sign in as well as getting water and any other resources that were needed. I loved being able to volunteer here because weightlifting is something that I have a great respect for. I enjoyed seeing other groups of people performing different exercises around the convention center as well. I felt that this was a place where people could go to express themselves and show the public what they have a passion for. I learned that it takes intense work to get to where these people are now. I realized how dedicated they are to their workout programs and lifestyles. It is shocking to realize that only the best of the best make it to the top so everyone is competing for one shot to get that type of status. I learned that being apart of a group of people with the same intentions is far better than trying to do something on your own. I learned that being apart of a supportive community can help motivate you to be the best you can be. Everyone was so supportive of each other and it was making me want to join every company that was at the EXPO. This event inspired me as a leader to be open to all walks of life and to know that there is more than one way to get a job accomplished. Because of service learning, I am willing to go to whatever extremes to pursue my passion and to be a motivation for other people as well. True Colors Reflection

Today I learned what the True Color test was. It is a personality test that describes what color you are based on your characteristics. There were four colors that you could potentially be: blue, gold, green, and orange. You had to put a number (1-4, four being the most like you) under a small list of personalities. When you answered all the columns, you added them up and whatever score was the highest under a color, that was what you were. My highest score was an 18 under the color gold. That color represented order, cleanliness, practicality, timeliness, and generosity. I was really excited with these results because they are big indicators of who I am. I learned that I can also be other colors too. My next two highest scores were green, which represented knowledge and philosophy, and orange, which represented adventure and being outgoing. With this knoweldge I know what some of my strengths are and I know what areas I can improve upon. My lowest score was ten which was the color blue. That represented compassion and empathy. I know that in the future I can use my strengths and be able to put my best foot forward when doing group projects. I can look to surround myself with people who have different “colors” than me so that way I can become a more versatile person. When doing group projects I know that I am strongest in being organized and I can help the group turn things in on time. If I were to be apart of a support group, then I know that I would have to be more open minded to being empathetic and optimistic towards people.

Leadership Post

In my opinion, leadership means to put other’s concerns before your own, show empathy and kindness to others, and having confidence in your skills. In order to be a leader I feel that you have to have an accepting type of personality and respect other people’s opinions regardless of what you think. An example of when I have seen leadership in sport is when I was apart of a track team and seniors took the lead in the practices. They would start the stretches and they would know everyone by name, which was cool to see. Having seen that, it inspired me to be that type of leader in all the activities I do because I saw the respect that everyone had for the seniors. I believe this is leadership because they were always on time with practices because they listened to the coaches and they had to uphold their standards. They knew everyone and to me that shows leadership be casual they did not leave anyone behind or think too highly of themselves. They all had great sportsmanship qualities and were highly encouraging when the team needed it the most. The seniors knew they were important, but they shared their successes with the rest of the team too.

About Me

My name is Katie Clouse and I am an incoming freshman this year. My major is Exercise Science and I hope to minor in psychology too. I love learning about how the body and mind works, so I am pursuing a PT degree. Some goals that I want to accomplish this year include staying on top of grades, meeting diverse friends, getting into a workout club of some sort, and enjoying the atmosphere that Ohio State has to offer.

As I grew up, I would always love to be outside and doing some sort of physical activity. In high school I participated in basketball, softball, track, and cross country. Sports have helped me become more social because when I was in grade school I was not the most talkative kid in my class. They have also helped me to grow in my faith and become a better version of myself. I have used sports as a way to stay in shape too because fitness means a lot to me. When I was younger I used to view myself in a negative light based on what I looked like, so I used physical fitness as my personal therapy. I have gone to personal trainers and have had memberships at different types of gyms.

Some hobbies that I have include working out, reading books, being around friends, listening to different types of music, and doing activities outside. I also love to watch any comedy movies or any binge worthy show on Netflix. Another activity that I love in particular is being able to help anyone in need. I believe that I get more of an award being able to help make someone’s day, than having them do something for me. I am definitely looking forward to being in a group of people who share the same interest of sports and making a positive impact on the community. However, I believe I am most excited to go to football games and experience the atmosphere there. Go Bucks!
