A school nurse plays such a vital role in the school atmosphere. The school nurse is there to help nurture and care for students. Some may think that the school nurse is just there to provide band aids when someone is hurt. However, school nurses are educators, because we are constantly teaching students about their bodies, ways to keep themselves safe and healthy, ways to care for their bodies, and ways to have healthy habits and lifestyles. We are also educators and resources for staff and family members. We are counselors, always listening and helping students work through concerns with themselves and with their friends and family. We are collaborators, always working together with the students, teachers, counselors and other staff, family, and community resources to ensure the most complete care is given. We also do screenings to help ensure students’ hearing and vision are not impaired for learning. Last, but certainly not least, we are caregivers. We provide first aid, comfort, medications, food, address healthcare needs, provide emergency care, if needed, and provide general care for (and/or resources) for students, staff, and families. I believe school nurses strive to help students be as healthy and as successful as they can be in every aspect of their lives.
