G.O.A.L.S Statement

I have developed a better global awareness through my Arabic class, where I have not only been learning Arabic, but also cultural nuances in different Arab countries. My worldview has been broadened by being educated on a culture so different than my own. My interest in international studies has made me well aware of the process of studying abroad, and my London Honors class has taught me how to prepare myself for studying abroad by being well educated on the cultures.

My Bad Language seminar allows me to practice original inquiry by participating in a research study on the use of what society considers “taboo language”. In this class I work with a group to create my own social experiments to acquire data about who uses curse words an why.

Finally being able to take challenging classes in fields I am interested in has made me more passionate in my academics. I chose international studies because of my passion for diverse cultures and ideas, and linguistics because of my love for language study and research. Arabic and Korean are language I have always wanted to learn, despite the challenge. I chose these because of my passion for language and culture, but also to set myself apart in a challenging job market.

I have been able to take my leadership from varsity captain in high school and transfer it to my intramural volleyball teams at OSU, where I organize and facilitate practices and overlook team dynamics. This has helped me better my leadership skills in a group setting with a more diverse team, both in skills and backgrounds, and to identify the weaknesses I need to perfect for future leadership opportunities.

As a Morrill scholar, I have been able to take my understanding of social issues and enact change through service work. I plan to partake in community service groups in Columbus under Morrill Scholars to help the community. I also want to be a good representation of a socially mindful individual and help to educate others in the Ohio State community on social issues.
