First Time Voting and My Growth

The 2018 midterm election was said to be one of the most important and it was widely advocated for, especially to the younger voters. It was a fulfilling experience as my first time voting, even when the outcome was disappointing. It made me question the state in which the country is in but also brought hope that people will fight for what’s right. Following the election were many debates from my peers, much to my chagrin as I do not like speaking about politics. I believe in civil exchange of opinions and arguments, but it was bothersome to see privileged individuals ridicule and make faces at someone who is expressing their opposite views. I should have spoken out. Usually I am not an expressive person, but this experience has influenced me to practice public speaking and make effective arguments. The semester was heavy on me working towards my growth in confidence and along with this are my endeavors to become an influential public speaker and being able to make effective arguments. I am continuing on my journey towards growth in character and better mental health.

Year in Review: Freshman Year Semester 1

It had been a difficult transition from high school academics to OSU leveled courses, especially that of the sciences. I had started my freshman year taking a difficult science course, and I ended up dropping it; I didn’t expect the difficulty, and I have been told that that course here at OSU was meant to be such. I knew dropping it was the right decision for myself. I realized that I had to prioritize what I need to do and develop a new set of habits than what I had as a high school student. So, I ended up taking easy courses during my first semester and during this time, I was able to reflect on what I needed to improve and I was in the process of changing my habits so that I may be prepared for next semester. I had realized that change is necessary, especially ones that will help you significantly. With this change, I am hoping for success, and if not, improvement, for the upcoming semester.

Aside from academics, I knew I had wanted to participate in extracurricular activities, but didn’t know what. I got an email one day that a group was looking for campus students to be mentors for high school refugee students to help them through the process of college applications and how to prepare as a student throughout their high school journey. I knew I had wanted to join this because as a minority myself, I had wanted to help others who have the same desire for education even with our circumstances. I hope that being able to help these students will impact them just as I hope and look forward to learning a lot from them. So far, this mentor-mentee relationship, as well as other factors, had affected me in a way that it had convinced me of wanting a life filled with helping those who are in need of service or aid.

Diversity and the United Nations have always been interests of mine. For this reason, I have been considering a minor in international studies. Medicine and international-related fields are what I want my future to consist of, and being able to incorporate the two together would be just as great. As for now, starting with the basics is important and I am eager to see where my efforts take me for next semester, next year, and so forth.

Empty Bowls

The  empty bowls project was  a process that included making, glazing, and selling the bowls. Each of the bowls were made and painted by a Mount student. When it came down to sell the bowls, it was a period in which I was able to see so many people come and willing to buy a bowl, knowing that the proceeds will go to the Mid-Ohio food bank and help the hungry. What really amazed me the most was that for every $10 donated to the Mid-Ohio food bank, they are able to multiply it to $110, so I myself couldn’t resist to buy a bowl as well.

Being a Mount and the Fall Harvest Jamboree

This was the first service that I had to do with Mount outside of the University. In doing this, the experience gave me a sense  of accomplishment and it allowed me to realize that being part of an organization that focuses on service as well as developing yourself to become a better leader is something that I need and can enjoy.

About Me

I am Don Cing. I am an undergraduate on the pre-med track and majoring in biochemistry. Becoming a doctor is what I have aspired to be for a long time. For now, my options are becoming an oncologist, a surgeon, or an emergency doctor. I would like to make my undergraduate years a fun time with many great experiences. Being a part of the Mount Scholars program, I look forward to what it has to offer and the services that I will be able to offer others. Hopefully I will also be able to participate in clubs that pique my interest.  During my free time, I have many options that I enjoy to do. Sometimes, I would read books. Other times I would play the piano or violin, regardless of the fact that I am not that good. I especially enjoy being able to spend time with those close to me. When I am out of options, I like to look for something new to do. I believe that everyday there’s always something to learn, and that everyday we should try to be a better version of ourselves than the day before.
