Project Statement
The sketchbook project was one that got me excited about the combination of digital design and physical creation. I focused on trying to insert pages that would pull out my creativity and inspire me to want to use it. I have always struggled with filling sketchbooks and often ditch them mid use, but I think because I put so much thought into each material and page and customized it to my personal use, I was able to utilize it for both recreational use and to plan out future projects. It was most important to me that it was functional, if not it wouldn’t be used by me. I chose the spiral binding method for that reason. I don’t like having to crease the spine to get a sketchbook to lie flat as it interferes with my work. My secret element is integrated into the cover. Interchangeable magnetic pieces snap into place on the same plane as the rest of the cover. The pieces not in use can be stored in a plastic pocket at the back of the book. Using the laser cutter was imperative to this process and I learned the best ways to test settings on materials in order to get the result I was looking for. Most importantly, I enjoy filling up the pages within my book showing I customized it exactly to my needs and preferences.

Reflection
I like how my book turned out overall. If I were to go back, I would pick a different material for the front and back covers. When I originally tested materials to use, I chose the mat board because it was firm, easy to cut and raster, and it was something I had easy access to. After completing the book, using it daily, and throwing it into my bag wherever I go, I’ve noticed wear and tear on the corners of the book. In theory mat board was a great cover choice, but I didn’t take into account the durability of the material and I wish I had considered that aspect. It also has an unfinished look to it and burn marks from the laser cutter are more apparent than I would have liked. Other than that, I love the outcome of my sketchbook and it is fulfilling to get to carry around and show off something practical that I created compared to some of our other projects which are a bit more for show.
