Project Statement
My concept for this project was to build upon the obvious contrast that our materials of black and white cardstock provided and play with both curved and straight lines to achieve a strong sense of alignment. This specific principle intrigued me because especially with the inverted version side by side with the original, the exact location of each shape plays such an important role in how the piece reads. The connections at corners and the implied continuations of lines even where the shape doesn’t truly exist is what makes the piece so dynamic and visually appealing. I thoroughly enjoyed the process and the precision this project required along with the mix of analog and digital practices we utilized. I can appreciate the comparative nature of cutting things by hand, although tedious, as a follow up to creating the design digitally because it makes simplistic shapes turn into a complex composition.

Reflection
This project, being the first we’d complete, laid such an important foundation and understanding of the way shapes interact with each other and I really tried to explore that with my work. However, I think that overall, this project was much more about learning the value of perfecting our craft than anything else. Discipline is so important when looking to create such intricate designs by hand and having it instilled in us that multiple attempts to perfect our techniques can never hurt but only better the outcome of the project was personally what I got most out of this project.
