The qualitative analysis of histopathological, photographical and radiological images is time-consuming and subject to inter- and intra-reader variations. This affects the prediction of the clinical outcome in an undesirable way. As a result, we are developing image analysis systems for computer-assisted interpretations of these images to help pathologists and radiologists in their analysis of images. Our goal is to provide computational tools with which they can extract quantitative features useful for more objective and accurate detection, diagnosis, and prognosis. In addition, we are investigating high performance computational infrastructures to efficiently process these large images. The current systems developed in the CIALAB have provided promising results – both in terms of accuracy and also computational efficiency.

The Clinical Image Analysis Laboratory (CIALAB) was founded by Dr. Metin Gurcan in 2005. Dr. Gurcan has 20 years of image analysis experience both in industry and academy. The mission of the lab is to plan, design, develop, evaluate and deploy image analysis algorithms to make a positive difference in people’s lives. We help health professionals to make consistent and accurate decisions, scientists to explore some unique relationships while we train the next generation scientists and health professionals with the leading edge knowledge and technologies. Our lab members are some of the brightest postdoctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, medical students, interns and distinguished guests from prestigious labs from all over the world. To develop our projects on quantitative image analysis, we collaborate with radiologists, pathologists, oncologists, dermatologists, sports medicine doctors, surgeons, biologists, veterinarians, computer scientists, statisticians, human-computer interaction and design experts among others. Our projects are supported by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation and several foundations. Our work received many awards including NIH EUREAKA Award, NCI CaBIG Embodying the Vision Award, OSU CCC REAP Award in addition to our students’ many awards.

Demos of some of our projects and more information about the lab and our projects can be found on our website.
