Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: In the future I plan to study abroad in Europe to expand my global awareness. I will do this by broadening my knowledge on how different cultures operate on a daily basis, and how that compares to my own.
  • Original Inquiry: I plan to engage in research in the future of my college career, to allow myself to learn more about the process of research and how it helps the global community.
  • Academic Enrichment: My first semester I decided to take general chemistry, and through switching engineering majors it was no longer required for my current major of computer science engineering. Despite this, even though chemistry is one of my most challenging classes, I am staying with it for the rest of the semester to allow myself to grow.
  • Leadership Development: Currently I am in the Society of Women Engineers, as well as the Boo Radley Society, and hope to lead these clubs in the future. Also, a couple of friends and I am trying to get a club called the “Succulent Club” started up, and I am in the role of Vice President.
  • Service Engagement: I have engaged in the campus wide community service day known as community commitment, and plan to engage in similar service activities in the future as well.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Artifacts

The artifact I have inserted above is one of my first chemistry formal lab reports. In chemistry our lab reports consist of all of our data derived from the lab, the calculations associated with that data, the summary and discussion of the lab , and a conclusion. This artifact is important to me because chemistry is the most difficult class I am enrolled in at the time. I have never written a formal lab report before coming to college, so when beginning to write these it was a completely new thing for me. As a result a lot of time and energy goes into my reports, and especially into my first ones since I was confused on the criteria. Because of this my first few lab reports are very important to me, based on the amount of time and effort that went into them. I received good grades from my first few lab reports, so I learned that hard work pays off. This motivates me to try my best on my upcoming assignments, since that work will pay off.

About Me

Hello, my name is Lainey Chylik and I am currently a freshman at The Ohio State University with the intended major of ecological engineering. I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and am excited to spend the next four years in Columbus! I do not have any very specific goals currently, except to do well in school, stay active, and join some of the various clubs and organizations throughout the university. I am very interested in ecological engineering because I have always been conscious about the world around us, and want to help ecosystems keep up with our growing footprint. Growing up with five chickens, three cats, and two dogs, I am a big animal person and am very in touch with the earth. I hope for ecological engineering to expand this passion of mine with the environment, and allow it to grow.
