My GOALS

Global Awareness: Next semester, I will be taking Spanish 2, and the following semester, Spanish 3. These classes will expose me to a language and culture unlike mine, enriching my global knowledge. Also, I would love to study abroad sometime in my undergraduate studies. I may participate in OSU’s STEP program in order to obtain funding to enhance my appreciation for other cultures around the world.

Original Inquiry: At some point over the next couple of years, I will most likely participate in research. This will not only be good for my medical school application, but it will also be enjoyable since it is something I have always wanted to do.

Academic Enrichment: Being a member of the Honors program at OSU means 4 years of rigorous coursework. I will be taking pre-med classes, including organic chemistry for two semesters, anatomy,  and microbiology. Many of my projected classes will be 3000-level classes or above, and I am required to take at least 1 graduate-level course for my major for further enrichment and rigor.

Leadership Development: I will be joining more clubs as my years here continue, especially those geared towards service, academics, and maybe even a few fun ones.  These will, in addition to my past work experiences, will familiarize me with the best way to lead and engage with people.

Service Engagement: As part of a strong medical school application, I will need to have a strong background in service, which I plan on accomplishing through nursing home and hospital volunteering over winter and summer breaks. Through these projects and any clubs in which I am involved, I will be able to serve effectively and make my environment a better place.

About Me

My name is Emma Chufar and I am a first-year undergraduate student at The Ohio State University majoring in neuroscience. I am from North Canton, Ohio, a town about a third of the population of my campus. This new home was definitely the best choice for me; I wanted to go to college for academics, and OSU became my choice once I saw the neuroscience program here. Now that I am officially a student, I also know about the incomparable sense of community I get from my dorm, my major, and my campus.

When I was in elementary school, I began to realize how much I loved science and how much of an impact I could have on people’s lives by pursuing a career in this field. Throughout high school, I took multiple AP science courses and completed the PLTW Biomedical Sciences coursework, which furthered my interest and narrowed my career choices. Now that I am studying what I love, I am looking forward to completing my later pre-med and major classes. To me, there is nothing more important than using my skills to help others, so I hope to take what I learn in undergraduate studies and further my education in medicine. If all goes to plan, I will be the first person in my family to ever become a doctor. My parents like to joke that they are not sure how I obtained my interest in science, as my dad is an engineer and my mom is a preschool teacher, but I could not imagine spending my life doing anything else.
