CC was born in Italy and sailed across the Atlantic as a Spaniard with funding from queen Isabel. He sailed in search of Asia to find a better way to get spices and other sacred goods. When he first landed in America, he called the natives Indians because he thought he got to the indies of Asia. While over three million people on the island died by slavery, war, or the mines, 90% of Indians died due to European diseases such as smallpox. I don’t agree with slavery or the way he treated the Indians, he was really acting as would be expected of a conquistador during that time period. He acted in a poor way but he did inspire several nations to go west and settle in America. If not for him people could have been discouraged from coming to the New World. Curiosity is what led scientists to make their amazing discoveries, and we should celebrate him for that.
