Year in Review

During my first year as an engineer at the Ohio State University, I was able to experience what it is like to be an engineer through many group works in the Fundamental engineering classes 1181 and 1182. In 1181, I worked through many different labs and at the end of the semester, the train lab, where I was able to grow as a leader in the group to lead the group to success in each lab assignments. In addition, during the second semester in 1182, I was able to take charge in some parts of the development and design process of the Advance Energy Vehicle lab that took the entire semester to complete. I enjoyed the AEV project as I was able to experience the entire process of designing and the development of our vehicle from scratch to complete the assigned task to autonomously pick up a cargo at the end of a track and bring it back all while using the least amount of energy. It was especially satisfying when our team won 3rd place in the AEV competition held after the project had been completed. Finally, I enjoyed learning how to use engineering software such as Solidworks and MATLAB during the two semesters of the Fundamentals of Engineering courses. These experiences helped me to decide on mechanical engineering as my major during the year.

G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]

Career

Scholars Presentation on Water Based Batteries

The presentation is on the topic of Water based flow batteries and how they are applied to automotive in the present time and how they will be applied to the automobiles in the future. By working on the presentation, the aspiration to work in the automotive industry was further developed and strengthened. This project has opened me to new technologies that applies to the green engineering GOALS.

About Me

Tennis Match

Hi my name is Yubin Choi and I am the first child to my two Korean parents. My parents immigrated to the United States for my father’s Masters Degree studies at Boston University. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts and have lived there for the first 17 years until I had to move to Denver, Colorado during my senior year of high school due to my father’s job. My favorite activities are playing sports, especially tennis, watching Top Gear (the BBC version only), which is a television show on automobiles, and socializing with friends. My favorite memories of high school are playing on the varsity tennis team during my junior year and being a part of the science team of the high school. The picture above is a picture taken during a tennis match during my junior year. Unfortunately both activities could not continue during my senior year when I had to move. My aspiration as of now is to work in the automotive field in a foreign country such as Germany or Japan. I plan on majoring in mechanical engineering in order to achieve that aspiration of mine.
