Project #9: Pattern
Monday, November 23
Letters within each section can be unscrambled to create words that help shape me and describe who I am. The box with numbers can be put into a correct order to reveal a series of numbers that have helped shape who I am.
Project #8: Collage of Key Memories
Monday, November 2
Memory Shown: The drive from Raleigh, North Carolina (my hometown) to Columbus, Ohio (where OSU is) through the West Virginia mountains with my family on the way to school.
List of Words: North Carolina, Ohio, mountains, winding, blur, window, trees, speed, peace within chaos, nature, peaks, home, new beginnings, whirlwind
Explanation/Synthesis of Words to Themes: I wanted to capture my favorite part of the trip: the drive. As I looked out the window objects, other cars, the scenery was all a blur (demonstrated by the drawn black and white hypnotic like pattern). That blur in combination with the mountains of West Virginia create a calm and peaceful effect even though the car is traveling at 7o+mph. I love the idea of relaxing and feeling calm even when you’re moving so fast in space. It makes me think I can still find serenity in a face paced life/world.

Project #6: Exterior Perspective Building in Landscape

My use of perspective in my final product was slightly incorrect. I revised and fixed it by printing out the image and redrawing the major components of the drawing using correct perspective rules.

Project #3: Still Life Tonal Drawing

Project #2: Tree Drawing
Monday, September 14
Response to Two Links in Project 2 Instructions:
Link 1: Dutch painter Piet Mondrian – https://medium.com/signifier/piet-mondrians-tree-paintings-cef4ccac881
Link 1 Response: I was very impressed by the chaotic abstractness of Mondrian’s work. His paintings of trees did not look like traditional trees in terms of having natural elements and color. His paintings took a unique color and geometric perspective of trees.
Link 2: Charles Gaines’s “Numbers and Trees” Series at the Studio Museum in Harlem – https://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/01/arts/design/charles-gaines-gridwork-at-studio-museum-in-harlem.html
Link 2 Response: I was very inspired by the unique marking and color patterns/schemes used by Gaines in his tree renderings. The sudden blast of color toward the middle of the canvas conveys the organized chaos and unique features of trees, with lines extending from the “leaf puff,” representing branches. The use of line, splatter/dots, and color give an energy to his works not normally found in peaceful drawings of nature such as trees.
