Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement

Global Awareness:

I plan to complete a study abroad experience at least once while I’m at Ohio State. I’m interested in traveling to Denmark for a study abroad experience observing the contrast in the healthcare systems of America and Europe. I also hope to revisit India and visit the free clinic that I have volunteered with since high school.

Original Inquiry:

In my first year, I became involved with cardiovascular surgery research at Nationwide Children’s Hospital at the McConnell Laboratory. I learned a lot from this experience but switched to a healthcare systems research at the Patterson Laboratory of Ohio State. At my lab, we work to find data-driven solutions to problems that decrease efficiency in healthcare workplaces. Specifically, the current project we are doing works to access the efficacy of augmented reality technology in aiding medical students in learning trauma cases. Additionally, I am a part of a new project that works to combat maternal and infant mortality that results from blood loss in hospitals. Through these experiences, I have learned what types of research I am interested in, and I hope to be involved in research again during the upcoming academic year, as well as publishing and presenting at more conferences.

Academic Enrichment:

I chose to study biomedical science because I believe that research works well in parallel with the pursuit of the medical field. The more technical science classes of the major, such as chemistry, biology, and research techniques, are complimented by my classes in medical humanities and medical pharmacology; humanities focus on the “people” side of medicine that allows for physicians to better connect with patients and understand their backgrounds. Pharmacology allows me to apply the specifics of science classes to the healthcare field by learning how medicines work with various systems.

Leadership Development:

I’m a member of the Ohio State Eminence Fellows, a close-knit community of student leaders dedicated to serving our domestic and global communities.  As an Eminence Fellow, I work with my peers to create a positive change in our community.

Service Engagement:

I am working with my class of Eminence Fellows to develop a service project, PowerHouse, to better the living conditions of low-income homeowners in central Ohio. As part of the executive board of The SOAR Initiative, we work to use research and technology to promote harm reduction measures in central Ohio. I also make time to volunteer at the James Cancer Hospital and at various sites around Columbus through Doctors Without Borders.
