I was lucky enough to be able to attend the talk Bryan Stevenson gave at Mershon Auditorium about the racial and socio-economic issues present in our country, which he discusses in his book, Just Mercy.  Bryan Stevenson is a lawyer and social justice activist. He has experience with defending people on death row who either were mistreated as prisoners or had to deal with unjust, unfair trials.

During this talk by Stevenson, he discussed the racial issues that are still present in today’s society that most people, including me, are oblivious to. The unjust justice system in some areas of the country need imperative attention. Bryan Stevenson is out to expose and help these areas. Attending this discussion has opened me up to these problems and made me realize that the country we live in is not what it is set out and known to be. Although many believe racism and prejudice are no longer a part of our modern day society, it is still a huge problem. From now on, thanks to Bryan Stevenson, I am no longer going to be oblivious and ignorant to these issues.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: My English class that I am currently enrolled in is called 1110.02: Race and American Short Fiction. This class has brought together a group of students with various backgrounds and political and religious views. Listening to varying views clash with each other has opened me up to new diverse ideas.

Original Inquiry: For my STEM EE Scholars seminar class, I was assigned an interview project. This project entailed contacting a upperclassman, a graduate student, and a professor from a research field of our interest.  By doing this project I was exposed to what it is like and what it takes to take part in research and advanced coursework.

Academic Enrichment: My three main academic interests include statistics, computer science and astronomy.  Because of this, I will be majoring in data analytics, which is a mix of both computer science and statistics. Along with this major, I am planning on throwing in a double minor with astronomy and one other undecided minor.  With these, I hope to one day work for NASA doing some sort of analytics/programming job.

Leadership Development: As a student here at The Ohio State University, I have involved myself in BDAA (Big Data Analytics Association). BDAA has introduced me to the field of Data Analytics and has given me a gist of what it is like to work as a data analyst. It is preparing me for my future life after college.

Service Engagement: I am a volunteer at COSI, a museum of science and math. There, I show the visitors of the museum cool experiments and explain to them how they work. I hope my work there will inspire the younger generations to involve themselves with the  STEM field and make them realize that science and math can be fun and interesting sometimes. They just need to keep their mind open.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. As you can probably guess, due to the fact that I am a part of STEM EE Scholars, I love science and math.  Also, one thing I am passionate about is helping others.  Therefore, volunteering at COSI, a museum of science and industry, was a great way for me to follow my passion of helping people, while spreading the knowledge of Math and Science to the up and coming generations.  By volunteering at COSI, I am glad I am able to inspire younger generations to involve themselves with the STEM field.

About Me

My name is Will Chiraz.  I’m from a suburban town in Long Island, New York and am currently a freshman at The Ohio State University. I am a part of the STEM EE scholars learning community.  I’m planning on majoring in Data Analytics and am planning on adding on a minor. I was a part of my High School’s Math Team and Varsity Badminton team. My academic interests include statistics, computer science, astronomy, criminal justice and sports analytics, so my dream job is doing statistical analysis or some sort of computer programming for either ESPN, NASA, or the FBI.  I consider myself a high achiever, so I will be pushing myself to be the best I can be inside and outside the classroom throughout my years at The Ohio State University.
