The next step in Chipotle’s commodity chain is their raw materials being purchased. Chipotle believes in buying from local farmers, and they actually distribute the most local produce of any restaurant company in the country. Chipotle considers anything within a 350-mile radius to be “local”. The farms that they partner with understand the importance of having nutrient-rich soil without the need for pesticides and fertilizers. Their suppliers also understand the importance of raising healthy livestock with no place for antibiotics or synthetic hormones. Many of the farms that Chipotle partners with have been with them since the start up of the company, when there were only a few restaurants in the entire country. These long lasting bonds are important because it has formed a mutual trust and understanding between the farmers and the company. Buying local helps to strengthen the local economy and build a sense of community, which is important to Chipotle’s brand.
