Reading With Children

Reading with your children is very important and something that should not be underestimated! Reading plays an important role in the language development of your child. Some parents might not think reading to their child is not important or necessary because the child does not quite fully grasp the language yet, however, in the research study (below) “The Sooner The Better: Early Reading to Children” we see that this is not in fact true! This study shows that reading with children before six months old supports children’s’ language development.

While reading is important, it is also a great idea to select books that will help in the development of your little one in early childhood. Here are three books suggested below to get you started.

“The Color Monster, A Story About Emotions” buy Anna Llenas is a book about a monster who is feeling confused. He is displaying multiple emotions at the same time such as anger, sadness, scared, and happiness. The monster has a lot of different emotions and and is taught what each emotion and feeling is using colors. This book teaches children how to express their emotions and what they mean using colors. With this- they will gain self awareness that is a key to their emotional development.

“I Can’t Eat This Stuff” by Liz Fletcher is an interesting book that teaches children the importance of eating their vegetables. Louie (an elephant) is not so sure about eating all these new foods, but after some convincing, he decides to try them, and sees that he ends up liking them. This book shows children all the great things that vegetables can do for your health. Nutritional awareness is key for both the parent and the child.

“All Are Welcome” is a book that teaches children about diversity. It shows a group of school-kids from all different faiths, traditions, and backgrounds playing side by side and celebrating each-others’ uniqueness. It teaches about diversity and inclusion in a way that is easy to understand for children.
