Welcome Week!

I participated in many of the Welcome week activities such as the West Fest and Zedd’s Welcome concert! It really allowed me to get a sense of what it is like to become a Buckeye and become part of this larger family.

UNICEF’s Masquerade Ball and TASA’s Moon Festival Performance

As part of J2K, I performed Red Velvet’s song Red Flavor with 4 other J2K members for OSU’s annual UNICEF’s Masquerade Ball as well as TASA’s 7th Annual Moon Festival Event. In the process of learning the dance and performing, I’ve further learned what it is like to be in a team and develop skills to adjust to the decisions our entire groups make. This has lead me to continue my love for dancing!

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness:

I’ve combined my love for dance and cultures through participation in J2K, an organization that does performances to Chinese, Japanese, and Korean dances for cultural shows and events. Recently, I’ve also joined a dance group, Queen of Aces, that focuses more on Korean pop dances and also participate in various cultural events such as the Korean Culture Show in the spring. I will continue to explore different cultures and increase my awareness of other cultures during my years at OSU by attending different cultural events as well as different cultural clubs.

Original Inquiry:

Some opportunities I want to look into are conducting research in fields that I am interested in and closely work with a faculty member to gain more lab experience. Something similar is in my Honors Biology lab, we’ve been doing a project where we analyze bacteria resistance in some soil samples we collected; we are in the process of completing the project to see what our findings include. In the future, I would like to research in the fields of Integrative Medicine as well as Neuroscience.

Academic Enrichment:

I will continue to take numerous amounts of Honors classes to challenge myself academically. Also, I want to study abroad and gain more experience in overseas education.

Leadership Development:

I’m working alongside with a TA of scholar’s seminar class for my work and learning how to be a leader for the next semester. I would also like to find an organization I’m interested in and gain a position in the organization. Some of the clubs that I’m interested in is Volunteers Around the World and other organizations that are involved in service as well as medicine. Some other small leadership roles I’ve partaken is in the J2K and Queen of Aces dance group, I lead and teach some of the dances to other members.

Service Engagement:

During the breaks, I will begin volunteering again at my local hospital, Jewish Mercy Hospital. I also want to try tutoring locally where I live in subjects I’m interested in such as Chemistry and Math. I’m also making it a goal to volunteer at soup kitchens or homeless shelters, and even orphanages. In the future, I plan on volunteering overseas in service projects such as the ones in Volunteers Around the World or Service Brigades. Recently, I’ve joined Buckeyethon and plan on fundraising to support  the cause as well as participate in the dance marathon.

Biology and Chemistry Lab Observations!

Left: Plant cells under the microscope to determine the states in mitosis

Middle: Agar plates to culture the growth of bacteria in the soil samples that we collected.

Right: Chemistry Titration to find the molar mass of an unknown sample.

In my classes Biology 1113H and Chemistry 1210, we performed many labs from performing anti-bacterial resistance analysis to titrations. I’ve learned that labs are very important to the learning process because it takes the class material and integrates them into hands-on learning experiences. These activities are very enriching and will contribute to my success in mastering science concepts and apply them to real life. Many of the lab techniques that I’ve learned so far will be critical for my later labs as well as being a better scientist.

OWL Welcome Leader!

Before coming to Ohio State, I joined the OWL program as a welcome leader; it concludes helping people in our building move in on move-in day. For 8 hours, our main purpose was to make the move in process and transition to Ohio State a lot easier and less intimidating. When students and their parents drove into the moat, we cheered and welcome them to their second home and made sure they felt the excitement we did when they arrived.

About Me

Emily Chen, a 1st-year student, graduated from Milford High School’s class of 2017. During high school, Emily was involved in many extracurricular activities such as being on the executive board of Key Club, President, and Language leader of One World Many Cultures, Co-Founder and Co-President of Chinese Club, Student Ambassador and Youth Leader of the Cincinnati-New Taipei Sister City Exchange Program, and an active member of NHS.

A meaningful experience Emily had in high school is being able to teach 2nd graders a foreign language, particularly Chinese. She was able to expose her students to cultures other than their own and see how diversified the world is. As the president of One World Many Cultures, she was able to lead 30 student-teachers who taught 600 elementary students the basics of 3 different languages and cultures. By teaching the 2nd graders a new language, she had to prepare material for the lessons and activities to engage them in the lesson.

Emily was also a volunteered at The Mercy Jewish Hospital, working in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit.

At Ohio State University, Emily Chen studies Neuroscience on the pre-med track, and the ultimate goal is to attend medical school and become a pediatrician. Other activities Emily is interested in is cultural dancing, which she is part of a dance group called Queen of Aces.
