Through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), this posting seeks a graduate student or postgraduate to engage in projects with the Research and Innovation Center (RIC) at the National Energy Technology Laboratory.
The Penn State START (Steady Thermal Aero Research Turbine) project is designed to study turbine blade cooling approaches in a warm-flow experimental rig. The project focuses on innovating turbine cooling using true-scale engine hardware, developing sensors and instrumentation for smart turbines, advancing additive manufacturing for turbine applications, and integrating and embedding sensors through additive manufacturing. There is a need for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling of the turbine blade geometries used in the experiment to provide a better understanding of the experimental data.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in these elements (but not necessarily all):
- CFD Modeling
- Heat Transfer
- Fluid Mechanics
