New Research Opportunities with DoD

Collaborative Hypersonic and Missile Defense Research
Air Force Institute of Technology | Dayton, OH | STIPEND PROVIDED

In this project the participants will experience hands-on learning through collaboration with AFIT Graduate School of Engineering and Management Faculty in Hypersonic Vehicle development by configuring new geometries in CAD; modeling and simulating the vehicle response to aerodynamic, structural, and thermal loading conditions; and conducting physical experiments for validation. Participants will predict the vehicle response under multiple flight paths, maneuvers, and load conditions, and determine the vehicle’s sustainability and resilience through the computation of stresses, deflections, and buckling resistance.

Robotics for Engineer Operations
Engineer Research and Development Center | Champaign, IL | STIPEND PROVIDED

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary research and development team in creating a modeling and simulation environment. The participant will research the interaction between multiple types of construction equipment by testing various types of simulated tasks. Finally, the participant will participate in the development of decision making algorithms based on the simulation results and apply those algorithms to actual scaled prototype hardware.

Extracorporeal Life Support for Treatment of Lung and Renal Failure
U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research | San Antonio, TX | STIPEND PROVIDED

The Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) research projects within the Department of Expeditionary Critical Care focus on lung failure, renal failure and combinations thereof occurring due to severe combat relevant trauma and resuscitation during 72-hour long round the clock studies at prolonged field care timelines. Participants will collect, analyze and monitor vital signs and physiologic measurements; assist in conducting the studies; and, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator operate infusion pumps and various ECLS devices. They will also provide support during ex-vivo and in-vivo experiments on benchmarking of ECLS devices. The participant will learn techniques in experimental design, data collection and analysis, and prepare scientific abstracts and manuscripts.

VIEW ALL OF OUR CURRENT OPPORTUNITES

The mission of the Department of Defense (DoD) is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and protect the security of the United States. To support this mission, the DoD is the largest employer of scientists and engineers in the nation. To ensure a continued talent pool, the DoD works hard to grow the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) workforce. The DoD’s Research Participation Programs are managed by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) under an interagency agreement between the DoD and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). With the support of the DOE interagency agreement and management from ORISE, the DoD prepares and strengthens the United States STEM workforce.
