Call for Judges – Central Ohio You Be The Chemist Challenge

As the Central Ohio Regional You Be The Chemist Challenge Organizer, I invite OSU grad students to consider volunteering in support of the  You Be The Chemist Challenge  a collaborative, multilevel academic competition that celebrates the science of chemistry and elevates STEM careers!   The Central Ohio Regional Challenge will be held on Saturday, February 15th, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Columbus Metropolitan library.   Univar Solutions, a global chemical distributor, partners nationally with the Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF) by supporting  You Be The Chemist programs.    We are committed to advancing STEM education by connecting with students in the early years to instill a love of science through hands-on activities and competition.

I’m  excited to share fifteen teams from across Ohio will participate in our Challenge.    Each team consists of 4 students from grades 5 through 8.  The competition is a quiz bowl format comprised of four rounds, 10 short answer questions each round.  Students work across their team to answer timed questions.  Judges score the team’s answer card and the result is recorded by a scorekeeper.

Last year, more than 60,000 students from 40 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico participated in the You Be the Chemist Challenge! The program continues to grow every year, and I hope you will support its success by  volunteering as a judge for the Central Ohio Regional Challenge.  This is a great opportunity for the  future generation to interact with OSU grad students.

For judging , the Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF) provides a scoring key that has a detailed explanation of how to score each question so that anyone can score the questions. The scoring key is available well in advance of the competition so that the Judges have plenty of time to review it before the competition.

Fulfilling this role requires volunteers to:

  • Before the Challenge
  • During the Challenge
    • Ensure the competition complies with all the rules
    • Score team answers using the scoring key during each round, track total team scores throughout the competition, and calculate total score at the end of the competition
  • The Speaking Judge’s Responsibilities Include
    • Announcing the participants advancing to the national level
    • Announcing appeal results (if applicable)
