Becoming a Postdoc: How to Choose a Mentor and Make the Most of your Postdoctoral Training

Postdoctoral training is a necessary step to become faculty in most STEM fields. Recently postdoctoral positions in the social sciences and humanities have become common as well. This session will focus on the critical aspects graduate students need to consider when selecting a postdoc position. Choosing the right postdoctoral mentor is crucial for success but this is not enough. Understanding their responsibility for driving their career and professional development is also essential. Learning what resources to look for and how to approach this training period increases the chances of success at this level. This workshop will include topics such as funding, mentorship, career development, job responsibilities, and benefits.

Professional Development: How to Succeed as a Mentor

Graduate and professional students are in a unique position in which they may have mentors critical to their success and may also serve as mentors to other graduate and professional students or undergraduate students. Sometimes you may find yourself in the position as a mentor because someone picked you as their mentor. Even if you are not yet a mentor, you will likely have the opportunity in the future. Learning how to be a successful mentor now will also help you navigate the relationship with your current or future mentors. Join OUAB Grad/Prof for a workshop that will cover the following topics:

1) How to establish a successful mentorship,

2) Skills useful to maintaining a positive mentorship, and

3) Tips for serving as a mentor

OUABreaking the Glass Ceiling

Megan Rapinoe is an American professional soccer player who plays for and captains Reign FC in the National Women’s Soccer League, as a midfielder and winger. As a member of the United States women’s national soccer team, she helped the U.S. win the 2015 and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup as well as gold at the 2012 London Olympics, and finish runners-up at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Since 2018, she co-captains her national team alongside Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan.

Rapinoe is an advocate for numerous LGBTQ+ organizations, including the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and Athlete Ally. In 2013, she was awarded the board of directors Award by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. She is also now a strong advocate for equal pay for the Women’s Soccer team, especially considering their higher viewership, revenue, and overall number of wins. In March of 2019, she filed a lawsuit along with her other teammates against the US Soccer Federation for gender pay discrimination.

OUAB will be taking its Creative Exploration series to Candle Lab in the Short North! Candle making workshops will happen every 30 minutes from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Registration for this event will be through our lottery system. Registration will close on 11/05/19 at 11:59 PM. You may register for yourself and a guest. Winners will be notified on 11/06/19. Submitting registration to our lottery system does not guarantee a spot to participate.

OUAB in the Kitchen: Central American Cuisine

Instructional Kitchen – Lower Level Ohio Union

Join OUAB in the Instructional Kitchen at the Ohio Union for a chance to cook a meal of your own under the guidance of the Union’s own professional chef, Chef Wolf. Following a cooking demonstration by the chef, students will collaborate with class members to create the menu providing a unique hands-on learning opportunity. In this fun and interactive environment students will enjoy a delicious meal and gain useful culinary skills to show off in their own kitchens.  Whether you’re are a master chef in your own kitchen or a novice, there is an OUAB in the Kitchen program for you.

Participants will be selected by OUAB Grad/Prof’s lottery system for high demand programs.  To register for the the lottery, please sign up using the link below.  Lottery registration will be available up until midnight on November 7th. You may register for yourself and one guest.  Those selected to participate in the class will be notified by noon the day after the lottery closes. Registering for the event does not guarantee a spot.

Wellness Series: Stereotype Threat and Microaggressions

Can you recall an experience when someone questioned your ability or affiliation because of a personal characteristic such as race, gender, or primary language? Have you ever feared that if you did not succeed, you would confirm a largely held stereotype about a demographic group to which you belong?  Have you wondered how to address stereotype threat or microaggressions? In this presentation, participants will learn

1) about stereotype threat and microaggressions research;

2) how to identify them when they occur, and

3) develop ideas around interrupting and counteracting them.
