Workshops and Events
Qualitative Research in the Age of Transparency (Lecture)

Transparency and reproducibility are becoming standard practices in social science research and, increasingly, requirements for funding and publication. But most requirements and guidelines are written with quantitative research in mind. What does this mean for qualitative researchers? What are some common concerns about the applicability of transparency (or reproducibility) to qualitative research? This lecture provides both a summary of ongoing debates and suggests some ways forward.

About the speaker:

Sebastian Karcher is the Associate Director of the Qualitative Data Repository at Syracuse University. His main research interests are in qualitative data management, curation, and the integration of data tools into scholarly workflows. He is an active contributor to several scholarly open source projects, including Zotero and the Citation Style Language, as well as a founding editor of the emerging Author Carpentry series of lessons. He holds a PhD in political science from Northwestern University. Sebastian has published in both social science journals such as International Science Quarterly and Socio-Economic Review and information science journals such as IFLA Journal and Data Science Journal.

Data Management for Qualitative Research (Workshop)

This hands-on workshop will emphasize the dos and don’ts of data management with a focus on qualitative social science data. The core of this workshop will focus on the data management plan (DMP) and participants will either develop their own DMP or learn how to develop existing DMPs throughout the workshop. The workshop will cover topics throughout the data lifecycle, from planning data management to sharing the data, with a focus on practical, hands-on advice.

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Gunjan Agarwal, associate professor in biomedical engineering, will be joining the Graduate School as a faculty fellow starting July 16. This is a temporary part-time position focused on several important initiatives, including the Graduate School Handbook revision. Please join me in welcoming Gunjan.

Also, I want to acknowledge Assistant Dean Kathleen Wallace who has decided to leave the Graduate School to explore new challenges. Kathy has made many contributions to the Graduate School and graduate community over the past 15 years. She developed the Graduate School’s strategic communications/marketing area, ran the Preparing Future Faculty program, and was instrumental in several major initiatives, including the recent Campus Conversations on Graduate Education. Kathy has been a trusted colleague. Please join me in wishing her well in her new endeavors.

Handshake: OSU’s new career development platform


Ohio State has switched to Handshake – a modern career development platform for students to explore career employment, internships and other opportunities, based on their interests, major and skills. FisherConnect and Symplicity (CareerEngine, Hireabuckeye, FutureLink, Buckeye Careers Network) have transitioned to Handshake.

Handshake offers many exciting new features, including:

  • Relevant feed of job and internship opportunities
  • News feed containing the latest information from career services offices and favorite employers
  • Resources specifically matching students interests

Student accounts are preloaded and can be accessed at, using their name.# and password. Students will need to complete their profiles with details, such as work experiences, skills, interests and organizations. Next, students can explore the many resources and tools that are available in Handshake.

Call for Resumes – Merck on-campus interviews

Recruiters from Merck will be on campus on August 27th to hold an employment information session and conduct interviews for the three positions listed below. The information session will be held from 9AM-10AM in CBEC rm 267 and will include a presentation, Q&A, and a light breakfast.

Discovery Chemistry

Merck is currently seeking exceptional chemists for positions within the Discovery Chemistry Department.  The successful candidate will join multidisciplinary, highly collaborative discovery teams to invent novel medicines through a combination of innovative synthetic chemistry and analysis of diverse data sets to build structure-activity relationships. Additionally, the successful candidate will generate novel, testable hypotheses to enable clear decision making.  Furthermore, he/she will help identify and validate new targets through chemistry and will be responsible for collaborative engagement with the external scientific community.  Success across this spectrum of activities will necessitate the application of the latest advances in chemistry and the development of innovative approaches to address new chemistry challenges. To accomplish the above, the successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills in a team environment.

Process Chemistry

Merck is currently seeking exceptional chemists for positions within the Process Chemistry organization. A successful candidate will be joining a group of innovative scientists with broad deliverables ranging from the design of manufacturing routes for drug candidates to building on our state-of-the-art catalysis capabilities. A Ph.D. in chemistry with experience in methodology/catalysis (including chemocatalysis, biocatalysis and heterogeneous catalysis), total synthesis, physical organic chemistry, or flow chemistry is required, along with a proven track record of solving complex problems. Candidates must possess strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Analytical Chemistry

The Analytical Research & Development department of Merck Research Laboratories is seeking applicants for an Senior Scientist position. The Senior Scientist is a laboratory-based scientific role tasked with solving complex analytical problems at the interface of chemistry, engineering, and lab informatics disciplines to enable development of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).  The successful candidate must function well and be able to collaborate in a fast-paced, integrated, multidisciplinary team environment.  Research experience should demonstrate successful application of state-of-the-art analytical techniques to solve chemistry problems, such as: chiral / achiral separations (HPLC / SFC/ GC / CE / IC), spectroscopic techniques (NMR, MS, UV-VIS / IR / Fluorescence / Raman), solid-state analysis (X-ray diffraction, DVS, DSC, TGA and microscopy), and classical wet chemistry techniques. Additional experience in synthetic / physical organic chemistry, mechanistic / kinetic studies of chemical reactions, continuous monitoring using process analytical tools, or lab automation / informatics is considered a plus.  Applicants must have effective organizational, multi-tasking, oral / written communications skills, show scientific leadership, and a desire to conduct research and publish.  In addition, experience leading small groups of technical personnel and analytical projects will aid in distinguishing candidates.
