Food Engineering and My Goals

What is Food Engineering and Why Should I Care?

Food Engineering is the design of systems for processing and distributing food and food-related materials while improving health and safety. Some specializations include food packaging, food safety and nutritional content, and food production. I chose to go into this field because I had an aptitude for engineering and was concerned about the future of food security in the face of a rapidly changing climate. It is one of my goals to reduce dependence on animals that are harmful to the environment, like cows, by coming up with an economically viable way to produce lab-grown meat. Another goal is to increase the availability of hydroponically grown fruits and vegetables. I hope that through these measures, the human race will have a future of food security.

Through my coursework at OSU, I have gained skills and knowledge about chemical reactions (be it organic or inorganic), calculus, electrical wiring, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.
