Lab Assistant at Yale University
For two summers I have conducted research in the Paleoceanography Lab at Yale University. My task was to separate, purify, and catalog samples of fossils brought in from expeditions. Once my training period was over, aside from occasional check-ins from the professor and lab supervisor, my research was conducted largely independently. I also participated in the weekly lab meetings, where members of the department would share their findings and theories and present them for peer review. This experience gave me lab skills, a familiarity with bench research, the ability to adapt to different laboratory conditions, and the confidence to work both independently and in a team setting.
Medical Technician at Agnone, Morrison and Associates
During the summer of 2018, I worked for a doctor’s office of ophthalmology: Agnone, Morrison and Associates in Marysville, Ohio. I had many duties, including running tests and interviewing patients for their medical histories, and writing referral letters for the doctors to their colleagues on Microsoft Word. The other medical technicians and I had to be very organized about which patient goes in which room and who would be doing the tests, which gave me strong communicative skills, as well as the ability to work in a detail-oriented way under stress with an immediate deadline. Speaking to patients about their medical histories also led me to have good interpersonal skills. In addition to this, the position honed my skills using Microsoft Office, being courteous to patients and coworkers alike, and using complicated technical equipment.
Surgical Technician in Managua, Nicaragua
November of 2016 I traveled with Stahl Vision to a free clinic in Managua, Nicaragua. There, I assisted the ophthalmologists in providing cataract surgery. My duties included applying eye drops, scrubbing during surgery, and preparing medical equipment for use. We provided cataract surgery to over 160 patients. This volunteer experience gave me a familiarity with working in a high stress, tight deadline environment and the ability to communicate efficiently with coworkers and supervisors.
