Year in Review
[ “Year in Review” is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student. You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year. G.O.A.L.S.
G.O.A.L.S. in Honors and Scholars describes a set of ideals that defines the Honors and Scholars program. Each of these five aspects of Honors and Scholars are crucial to the students involved, and help to build them into strong students and people here at OSU.
The first element of the Honors and Scholars G.O.A.L.S. is Global Awareness. To me, this communicates a message of being aware of global events and understanding of individuals in different cultures. OSU is a large campus, and there are many places around the world that OSU has connections with. For example, in my Spanish 1102 class, every student is required to participate in two Talk Abroad sessions, in which we have a video conversation with a native speaker in real time. We did the first one recently, and it was interesting to learn about the differences in culture from here to there. I will strive to be globally aware as I grow as a college student.
The second element is Original Inquiry. This seems to mean being interested in and driving forward creative projects and research and being actively involved with these topics. I will stay active in my classes and interested in research opportunities and I will be interested in any chance to apply my developing skills, such as internship opportunities. As I become more experienced in future years and begin more in depth classes that apply to my major, I hope to be more ready for these opportunities.
The third point is Academic Enrichment. This describes the Honors and Scholars standard of attempting more challenging coursework, which is described as rigorous “beyond the university norm.” This means that Honors and Scholars students are not only advised to, but expected to take difficult coursework and strive for excellence in classes. As an Honors student in the College of Arts and Sciences, I am expected to take Honors versions of classes and take Honors and challenging General Education classes. I will continue to work hard to keep up with the rigorous Honors curriculum.
The fourth part is Leadership Development. Honors and Scholars students are expected to develop leadership skills to help them both academically and with organizations outside of academics, such as community or co-curricular. I have had experience with leadership, as I was on my church’s high school youth ministry at St. Brigid of Kildare church, which helped organize meetings and service opportunities. Being a first year student here at OSU, my leadership opportunities are limited, but as I become more experienced with college and with my major and other activities I participate in, I hope to help future students by being a leader academically and with other activities.
The fifth aspect is Service Engagement. I was a member of NHS at my high school, Dublin Coffman, which is an organization dedicated to service to my community in Dublin. I also participated in many service events through my church’s high school youth ministry. I plan to continue participating in service organizations throughout college. I may be more active in the spring, as I have more time because of marching band in the fall. Honors and Scholars students strive to commit to service, so I plan to serve the community throughout my time here at OSU.
Career
[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career. Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated. Artifacts
[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation. An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps. About Me
Hi! My name is Jackson Chapman. I am a graduate of Dublin Coffman High School, and I love music! My goal is to find activities in college that I enjoy and that will also challenge me. Through this e-Portfolio, I want to keep track of my journey through college and follow my learning experience!
I am attending college at The Ohio State University because I know it is a top tier institution and I want to learn in depth about something that interests me, and I know that this is possible here. I am currently a Biology major, but I want to switch to Computer and Information Science, and I might minor in Chemistry. Being an Honors and Scholars student means a lot of extra work, but I believe that I can face any challenge in school if I work hard enough and manage my time well.
I am a member of the Ohio State University Marching Band, which has become a huge part of my life. I love music and I was in the marching band at my high school. Music has always been a big part of my life, since my family is musical and I have played instruments for a long time, so I am very excited to be in such an amazing organization as the OSUMB.
I don’t have one specific career choice in mind yet, but I would like to do something with computers and software. It has always interested me, and I really enjoyed an AP Computer Science class I took in high school.
One community that is becoming a bigger part of my life is the band students here at OSU. I always have fun when I spend time with them, whether during band or not. The band community is a good one, and I look forward to being a member for the next few years!
