10 Ways to Boost Employee Job Satisfaction

The Society for Human Resources Management conducts an annual report on employee job satisfaction and engagement.  The 2016 report found the following as top themes that influences overall employee satisfaction and engagement in the workplace.

  • Respectful treatment of all employees at all levels
    • Disrespect and negativity at the office are toxic
  • Compensation, benefits, job security and stable financials
    • Enough pay allows people to afford the necessities in life (e.g. food and shelter); job security allows people to pursue self-actualization
  • Trust and communication between employees and senior management
    • This suggests information is not being shared from the top down
  • Opportunities to use skills and abilities
    • This will allow managers to create high performing teams
  • Relationships with immediate supervisor(s) and their respect for employee ideas
    • This will generate trust and show support to people in their professional and personal goals
  • Physical safety at work
  • Work that is interesting, challenging or exciting
    • This will engage employees; engaged employees are 87% less likely to quit
  • Career advancement
  • Autonomy and independence to make decisions
    • If the manager is involved in all decision making, this robs the employee of the satisfaction of knowing they are doing a good job
