Science Café: Ohio’s Forests – Planning for Threats

March Science Café

Once covering nearly 95 percent of Ohio, forests have been, and still are, rich sources of industry, recreation, clean water, biodiversity, and beauty that underpin our well-being. Research, teaching, and outreach at The Ohio State University have helped nurture Ohio’s forests and people, and a new exhibit at the iconic Thompson Library highlights Ohio’s forests: Building Ohio State. Yet, even as in decades gone by, threats to the vitality and usefulness of Ohio’s forests continue to emerge. The presentation will discuss emerging threats and management challenges faced in our forests and relay how current management aims to maintain the services forests provide.

Date:  March 1, 2017, 6:30 p.m.
Topic:  Ohio’s Forests – Planning for Threats: Climate Change, Invasives, and More
Location: 165 Thompson Library **Note the special location**
Speaker: Stephen Matthews, Wildlife Landscape Ecology

Stephen Matthews is Assistant Professor of Wildlife Landscape Ecology in the School of Environment and Natural Resources at The Ohio State University and also holds an appointment as an ecologist with the US Forest Service’s Northern Research Station. His research focuses on understanding the responses of wildlife and forests to changing landscapes.

Share the Value of Peace Corps in Your Classroom

For over 55 years, the Peace Corps has been sending skilled volunteers to tackle agricultural and environmental needs in over 60 countries. The needs are greater than ever, and Ohio State CFAES can do support this effort by promoting Peace Corps service to our undergraduate and graduate students.

Ohio State Peace Corps recruiter, Gail Messick, is available for brief classroom talks to interested students. These talks can be as brief as 5 minutes or as long as 30 minutes.

If you are willing and open to having her address your class on the opportunities the Peace Corps provides, please connect with her at peacecorps@osu.edu or messick.37@osu.edu.

Alpha Zeta Partners – Recruiting New Members

My name is Landon Lindemer, student in CFAES and PR/Fundraising Chair for Alpha Zeta Partners (AZP), a professional honorary for students in CFAES. Because AZP has a rich history in our college (founded in 1897) and we are currently recruiting new members, we thought it would fun to share just a bit about our organization with faculty and staff in CFAES.

What is AZP? AZP focuses on scholarship, character, and leadership. After induction into AZP, first-year members complete a year-long program with goals around leadership development, developing individual leadership capacity for leading change in organizations and society. The heart of the AZP program is a six-week education abroad experience in Brazil. Students spend half of their Spring semester in an immersion learning experience that is a collaboration between CFAES and the University of São Paulo’s Escala Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ), in the state of São Paulo. You can follow the current study abroad experience here.

Work with students or know a current CFAES student? We are currently recruiting CFAES students who will be sophomores or juniors when traveling to Brazil in Spring 2018. Applications are due Feb. 6. If you have a student in mind who you think would benefit from this experience and meets the requirements of our organization, please let them know about our organization and the many opportunities they have through it.

Access Your CFAES Portfolium

This message serves as a follow-up to the email you received from Dr. Linda Martin announcing the new partnership with Portfolium.com that will provide ALL students and faculty the opportunity to create a professional, online digital portfolio.

At its core, Portfolium functions as a personal website, where students and faculty can document and showcase their academic and individual work developed over time. It gives everyone the ability to capitalize on their professional experience for as long as they desire, by providing a secure space to reference, reflect upon, and showcase work samples and competencies.

In today’s world, employers seek evidence of career-relevant skills and competencies beyond listings on a resume.  Students at all levels can easily create evidence-based credentials by attaching documents, videos, audio files, graphics, coding samples and presentations to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities.

In addition, Portfolium is also a:

  • Professional Network – Connect with peers, colleagues, professors, and potential employers. Become inspired by discovering other people’s work, or, receive feedback on your projects.
  • Jobs Platform – Look for jobs and apply to them directly through Portfolium. Employers are actively browsing Portfolium for talent.

Please be on the lookout for your Portfolium invitation with the subject: “Access your CFAES Portfolium.” The email will contain a link to activate your free verified account within the CFAES network using your Ohio State credentials.  If you missed the initial email, you can also join by using the Portfolium Resource Page at: http://go.osu.edu/portfolium.

Later in January, we will be offering our first CFAES Portfolium Challenge.  This will be open to any student who has activated their Portfolium account.  Prizes and details about what to enter will be announced.

For more information or inquires, contact Dr. Tim Rhodus (Rhodus.1@osu.edu).

SmartAg 4.0

The College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences announces the creation of SmartAg 4.0.  This event will bring together entrepreneurial-minded students interested in using technology to create the next generation of food systems.  SmartAg 4.0 will be held September 16-17 in the Agricultural Administration Building on the Ohio State University campus and is open to all Ohio college students.

The Internet of Things is reshaping food systems on a global scale.  SmartAg 4.0 is an opportunity for students to conceive, create and develop app‐based start-up business models in a team environment with the support of business strategists, subject matter experts, thought leaders, and idea people.  More simply stated, who will conceive the “Uber” or “airbnb” that reshapes agriculture?  Please note, students do not need computer programming skills to participate!

We have identified four domain areas for creating and judging app‐based business models: 1) food security and safety, 2) sustainability, 3) production efficiency, and 4) last mile.  SmartAg 4.0 participants should feel free to address societal problems at all scales from local to global.  This is a great opportunity for students to build their network of professional connections outside of Ohio colleges and universities.

SmartAg 4.0 will unite students, university faculty and staff, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists on the Ohio State University campus for a 24-hour period.  Multi‐disciplinary student teams will self-organize working from Friday night through Saturday afternoon to compete for prizes and cash awards.  Wireframe app designs and business strategies will be judged on Saturday afternoon by a panel of venture capitalists and agribusiness leaders.  In addition, participants will receive door prizes and food throughout the event.

National Black Farmers Association Opens 2016 Scholarship Application Period

Scholarships funded by the FCA Foundation support the development of a new generation of African-American farmers

March 1, 2016 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – The National Black Farmers Association (NBFA) Scholarship Program today opened the application period for 2016 scholarships. The application site, https://scholarsapply.org/blackfarmersassociation, will remain open from March 1 to May 2, 2016, or until 100 applications have been received, whichever comes first.

Funded through a grant from the FCA Foundation, the charitable arm of FCA US LLC, the program provides scholarships of up to $5,000 to students pursuing agriculture-related study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school.

“Higher education provides transformational tools, knowledge and resources,” said Lesley Slavitt, Head of Civic Engagement, FCA US LLC, and CEO of the FCA Foundation. “It is a privilege for the FCA Foundation to be a partner in ensuring that the next generation of African-American farmers receives the training and skills that will help them to thrive.”

Scholarship Applicants
NBFA scholarship recipients are selected based upon several criteria, including academic performance, demonstrated leadership and participation in agricultural and community activities, and career goals and objectives.

“The scholarship funds went toward my tuition, which has helped to lift some of the financial burdens placed on my family and I,” said Michael Coleman, a 2015 NBFA scholarship recipient who is pursuing a degree in animal science at Alcorn State University. Coleman, a Raymond, Miss., native, was awarded a $5,000 NBFA scholarship.

Established in May 2015, the National Black Farmers Association Scholarship Program awarded 19 scholarships nationally – a total of $87,000 – to support the development of a new generation of African-American farmers.

“In 1910, nearly 1 million black farm families owned over 15 million acres of land. Today, less than 45,000 black farm families own 3 million acres,” said John Boyd, Jr., President of the National Black Farmers Association. “The National Black Farmers Association Scholarship Program is a huge step in the right direction for the survival of America’s black farmers.

“Educating black farmers provides an opportunity to increase and advance agricultural technology, which will be passed on as a vital part of our rich farming legacy to future generations.”

About the National Black Farmers Association
The National Black Farmers Association is a non-profit organization representing African-American farmers and their families in the United States. As an association, it serves tens of thousands of members nationwide. NBFA’s education and advocacy efforts have been focused on civil rights, land retention, access to public and private loans, education and agricultural training, and rural economic development for black and other small farmers.

About the FCA Foundation
Since 1953, the FCA Foundation, the charitable arm of FCA US LLC, has invested more $500 million in charitable organizations and initiatives that help empower people, and build strong, viable communities. The FCA Foundation invests in programs that generate meaningful and measurable societal impacts in the following areas:

  • Education – programs that inspire young minds, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM);
  • Military – programs that support financial and basic needs of military service members, veterans and their families;
  • Multicultural/Diversity – programs that promote inclusion and opportunity for diverse populations; and
  • Youth Development – programs that help young people develop the skills and leadership qualities to succeed in school, at work, and in life.

Additionally, FCA US seeks opportunities to support communities through its Motor Citizens® volunteer program. This innovative program enables FCA US salaried employees to use 18 hours of paid time each year to be an Engine for Change by investing their time and talents in community service projects.

Denman Undergraduate Research Forum – Faculty Judges Needed

Dear Colleagues,

The Office of Undergraduate Education and the Undergraduate Research Office (URO) are pleased to announce the 21st Annual Denman Undergraduate Research Forum on Wednesday, March 30, 2016, beginning at 12:00 noon, at Ohio State’s Recreation and Physical Activity Center (RPAC), 337 West 17th Avenue, Columbus campus.

A call for faculty judges

With more than 600 students participating in the Forum, we need 500 faculty members across disciplines to judge the students’ undergraduate research projects. During a two-hour window at the Forum, faculty judges will meet with students to discuss their projects and creative endeavors. These discussions give students the opportunity of presenting their work while also providing them with feedback to enhance their learning experience.

Please consider serving as a Denman Forum faculty judge this year. To participate, register online by February 19. The URO will follow up with you to provide details. If you have questions about serving as a faculty judge, please contact URO program assistant Amanda Perrin.

Should you be unable to serve as a faculty judge this year, I encourage you to attend the Forum during the afternoon poster session. As you know, our students are engaging in exceptional research and artistic projects. Learn more about the Forum at denman.osu.edu.

Thank you for your support of Ohio State’s undergraduate research experience.

Sincerely,

Lorraine Silver Wallace, PhD
