Smart Campus Challenge for Students

As part of its annual academic investment program, the Ohio State Energy Partners (OSEP) will fund the Smart Campus Challenge, a venture capitalist-style student sustainability competition in February 2019.

Student teams who advance through an initial proposal process will have the opportunity to pitch campus sustainability projects to a committee of Ohio State faculty, staff, alumni and ENGIE program managers for the chance to get their dream project funded.

“Each of us plays an essential role in the innovation of tomorrow,” said Jean-Pierre Clamadieu. “By working together, we can accelerate innovation and the implementation of projects with widespread impact. We look forward to engaging with students on their ideas to imagine new possibilities and drive solutions to make Ohio State’s campus a model for others to follow.”

The student sustainability competition aims to connect student talents to sustainability innovation by funding projects that enhance its campus’ resource efficiency and environmental performance.

Affordable Learning Exchange

The RFP is now open for Affordable Learning Exchange (ALX) grants! ALX is a cross-campus partnership between the Office of Distance Education and eLearning, University Libraries, Undergraduate Student Government, and the University Center for the Advancement of Teaching. Our mission is to reduce the cost of textbooks and other course materials at Ohio State by advocating for open educational resources and other low-cost alternatives. These goals are directly in line with President Drake’s 2020 Vision. We have already funded 48 projects and are on track to save students $10M by 2020.

Grant award amounts range from $1,000-$24,000 per project. We are looking for projects of all sizes, from high-enrollment GE courses to small seminars and everything in between. Our goal is to continue to support the excellent and innovative teaching and learning practices of our faculty, while providing significant savings for our students in the process. Award amounts are flexible based on a project’s needs, and there are varying levels of support available. Grants may require matching funds from your department.

This first phase of the application process will remain open throughout Sept. 12, and is meant to simply collect your ideas. All you need to supply is some basic information and we’ll be in touch to help you through the next phase, where you’ll complete the full proposal.

New Career Development Platform, Handshake, is Live

Introducing Handshake – A New Career Development Platform for CFAES

As an important partner in student career development, we want to inform you of an exciting transition we are making. On June 5, the Career Office will be adopting a new dynamic recruitment platform, known as Handshake. Handshake is a contemporary job and career planning software that will help our college as well as all Ohio State University students find highly competitive opportunities such as top internships and full-time jobs.

This new system will take the place of what we and our users have historically known as Hireabuckeye.

Handshake will allow students to create dynamic profiles to connect directly with companies who actively recruit on our campus. Outside of formal recruiting, they will also gain access to a variety of career resources and events that will increase their knowledge about the world of work, providing them with clarity about career options available.

It will also give us the ability to grant faculty/staff in CFAES “fake student shadow accounts” so you can see what students see. We feel this will be a great tool to show faculty/staff the jobs, internships, and events that pertain to their advisees and prospective student recruits. It should greatly increase your resource base for current market opportunities and examples of what students can expect with any major or career interest.

Given the transition, we have been working to educate students on this change, so you may hear questions from students during your interactions. We have notified them of our transition from Hireabuckeye to Handshake, but please reiterate this to them should they ask.

This message is to first introduce you to this exciting change before we officially launch and give system access to students, alumni, faculty and staff.

Major timeline items of note:

  • May 7 – Employers Go Live date
  • June 5 – Go Live date for students/alumni
  • August 1 – Deadline for faculty/staff to request “fake student shadow accounts” before AU18 term

We plan to increase student and faculty/staff marketing around this new transition as we gear up for fall term and everyone returns to campus.

During this process, the CFAES Career Development Office is here to consult with you, should you have any specific questions on how to utilize Handshake or how to best refer students to it.

Mershon Center Grants and Scholarships Program

Each year, the Mershon Center for International Security Studies holds a competition for Ohio State faculty and students to apply for research grants and scholarship funds.

Research Grants

Applications for Faculty Research and Seed Grants and Graduate Student Research Grants must be for projects related to the study of national security in a global context. We are also interested in projects that emphasize the role of peace-building and development; strengthen the global gateways in China, India and Brazil; relate to campus area studies centers and institutes; or address the university’s Discovery Themes of health and wellness, energy and the environment, and food production and security.

In recent years the center has funded several dozen faculty and graduate student research projects with grants for travel, seminars, conferences, interviews, experiments, surveys, library costs, and more. To learn more about the types of projects funded, please see faculty project summaries on the Mershon Center website under Research and graduate project summaries in past Annual Reports.

Study Abroad

The Mershon Center has also established International Security Scholarships for Undergraduate Theses and Study Abroad to support undergraduates whose professional career plans lie in the field of international security and who would benefit doing research for an undergraduate thesis or studying in a foreign country. Applications will be evaluated by an interdisciplinary review committee that will make recommendations to the director of the Mershon Center. Scholarship amounts typically range from $2,000 to $3,000.

Field Research Grant for Graduate and Professional Students

The Tinker Foundation has awarded a Field Research grant to the Center for Latin American Studies, which will be used to provide graduate students with funds for travel to and within Latin America to conduct pre-dissertation research.

This award, combined with matching funds from the Office of International Affairs, will provide $20,000 in 2018 to graduate and professional students seeking to travel in Latin America for master’s thesis and doctoral research. Grant funding is renewable for a three-year period. Up to $3,000 per student may be awarded.

The Tinker Foundation promotes the interchange of information within the community of those concerned with the affairs of Latin America. Field Research grants allow students to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of language and culture, familiarize themselves with information sources relevant to their studies, conduct pilot studies and preliminary investigations, and develop contacts with scholars and institutions in their respective fields.

The application will be available on the Center for Latin American Studies website on February 1 with a deadline to apply by March 15, 2018.

iPad Digital Flagship Program

Digital Flagship, in collaboration with the University Institute for Teaching and Learning, is pleased to announce the Digital Flagship Educators cohort, a new opportunity for instructors and graduate students teaching general education courses to enrich their courses with technology.

Accepted instructors will receive professional development, technology and support in creating an “iPad Required” section of their 1000- or 2000-level course(s). Applications are due Thursday, Feb. 15. Click here for more information.

SmartAg4.0 – Sept. 29 and 30

Apps have done more than change our everyday lives, they have also transformed entire industries seemingly overnight. Uber has changed the way we commute; AirBnb has changed the way we find travel accommodations. Later this fall, students will have the chance to propose an app that will transform the future of food systems at SmartAg4.0.

SmartAg4.0 is a competition for Ohio college students who are passionate about food systems. While not a computer programming event, SmartAg4.0 models itself off of signature Ohio State events such as HackOHI/O in its spirit and structure. Over 24 hours, multi-disciplinary student teams work together to design an app and an accompanying business strategy to address major topics such as food safety and security, agricultural productivity, sustainability, and “the last mile.”

This year’s SmartAg4.0 competition will take place from September 29 through the 30. Students interested in learning more about the event can visit go.osu.edu/smartag4 or send an inquiry via email to smartag4@osu.edu.

Save the Date – Broader Impacts Workshop

The Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership (ACEL) will be hosting Dr. Anna Ball on Friday, September 8, 2017.  Dr. Ball will be doing several workshops about broader impacts in grant work.  All CFAES faculty, postdocs and graduate students are invited to a seminar that is being planned from 10  to 11:30 a.m. At that seminar, Dr. Ball will talk about ways faculty can build stronger broader impact (sometimes called outreach or evaluation) components of their grants.  We will attempt to connect via distance/Zoom for those unable to attend on Columbus campus; at present, we are looking at space options to accommodate.

Dr. Ball is Professor of Agricultural Education and Leadership at the University of Missouri (MU) and is currently a faculty fellow in the Office of the Provost managing similar duties as our Vice Provost for Academic Policy and Faculty Resources. Prior to that, Dr. Ball was a faculty fellow in the MU Office of Research focusing on broader impacts. On MU’s campus, Dr. Ball is not only sought after by college of agriculture faculty, but other faculty as well, to help them develop their education/outreach/evaluation components of their grants.  MU has been a leader in the development of the broader impacts network.  The network focuses on strengthening communication regarding the worth of tax-payer investments in research through effective broader impacts components within grants.

2017 Fulbright Week at Ohio State

During the week of April 17-21, 2017, Ohio State will be holding the 8th Annual Fulbright Week, an initiative co-organized by the Office of International Affairs, the Graduate School, and the Undergraduate Fellowship Office.  These three units have combined their efforts to provide a full week of events acknowledging past Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays recipients and hosting workshops, information sessions and open houses designed to inform potential Ohio State faculty, undergraduate and graduate student applicants about the international opportunities available through the Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays programs. All faculty, professionals and students are welcome to participate.

The Nathan Fechheimer Memorial Lecture Series in Animal Breeding and Production

Dr. Joy Pate, Professor of Reproductive Physiology, C. Lee Rumberger and Family Chair in Agricultural Sciences

The overall goal of Dr. Pate’s research program is to improve reproductive efficiency of dairy cows. The main focus of the research is to understand the cellular mechanisms that regulate the lifespan of the corpus luteum (CL), which is the ovarian structure responsible for progesterone production and the maintenance of pregnancy. Work from this laboratory has provided insight into cholesterol metabolism for steroidogenesis, the roles of endogenous prostaglandin production in luteal function, and the mechanisms by which exogenous prostaglandin results in the demise of the CL.
