Raise Your Hand for 4-H

Ohio 4-H youth development and CFAES could really use your help in winning a competition that will bring funds for STEM education and leadership training to thousands of Ohio youth. Many 4-H youth go on to become CFAES students and alums. If you could help promote the national Raise Your Hand for 4-H campaign, we’d really appreciate it.

Ohio is in a national competition to see which state can have the most people raise their hands for 4-H youth.  We are in the number one spot right now, and we want to keep it that way!

A few tips:

  • If you raised your hand last year, you can do so again. Please do!
  • You can participate if you are a 4-H volunteer or alum or even just a friend / admirer of 4-H. The addition of friends of 4-H is new this year.
  • If you can spread the word via social media and to friends, family, and coworkers, that would be great.
  • Some companies and organizations have agreed to promote the campaign for us as well. If you have a connection to help spread the word, let Beth Frey know.
  • The winning state gets $20,000 to support youth programming. Ohio 4-H will divvy the entire winnings between the top 35 counties with the most hands raised.
  • We won this contest last year, and we REALLY want to win again.

What’s Your Story – Campus Campaign Updates

Keep an eye on this page for Campus Campaign updates and stories.  If your department is doing fun things for the campaign or you have photos of campaign activities, please send them to badger.50@osu.edu to post on the page.

Our campaign goal is all about participation. CFAES has over 1,800 faculty and staff members. Imagine what wonderful things we can make possible if everyone gives a little!

Day of Giving – Feb. 28, 2018

Some Ohio State students don’t know how they’ll pay for their next meal.

It’s a very real problem, but we don’t often hear about it: after paying tuition, rent and the rest of their bills, some students don’t have enough left for healthy meals. While they’re working hard on their education, they’re not getting the most out of it – because a hungry student can’t concentrate or learn as well as a nourished one.

Save the date for Ohio State’s Day of Giving on February 28, 2018. Make your gift to buy a student’s next healthy meal.

CFAES LinkedIn

Please join the college’s newly launched LinkedIn group!  The group was launched this week and is open to current and retired faculty and staff, alumni, students, donors, volunteers, and friends of the college.

This is a great space to network, give or receive career advice, reconnect with friends, and share CFAES memories.

We will send an invite out to external stakeholders shortly, but wanted to let you know first.  Please join and help spread the word.

Nominate a CFAES Alumni

The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Alumni Society recognizes outstanding alumni every year.  They need your help in determining who should be honored this spring!

If you know a CFAES alumni that the board should consider for an award, please nominate them.  All that’s required is to fill out this one-page nomination form and submit it by November 13.

The board bestows four awards every year:

  • Meritorious Award
  • Distinguished Alumni Award
  • International Alumni Award
  • Young Professional Achievement Award

For more information, visit the alumni award page or contact Claire Badger at 614-292-0250 or badger.50@osu.edu.

Final Chance: Your Gift Does More – Michelle’s Story

I joined the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences on March 1, 2016. I joined during the Campus Campaign. One of my employees sent updates to the team promoting the campaign and how to give. This employee also encouraged our team to contribute to our fund. I was surprised to learn that we had our own fund, so I inquired as to how it was used. The team uses the fund to celebrate team accomplishments, individual employee milestones, or mourn the loss of loved ones.

The photo above is a flower arrangement we just sent to one of my team members last week that just had her first baby. Having come from state government where everyone had to chip in to do these types of things, I thought it was a great way to support the college and my team. So, I signed up. I like knowing that my support is going directly to support my team in their times of joy and sorrow.

If you haven’t donated, I encourage you to find something to support that either gives you joy or gives joy to others. The campaign ends Sunday, April 30, so please consider donating. Your gift – no matter how big or small – does more.

Your Gift Does More – Greg’s Story

Up until about 18 years ago, it was difficult for me to understand the idea of giving the dollars I earned from my employer back to my employer. It was about that time that I had a chance to learn about the Cooke Castle during a work trip to Stone Lab at Lake Erie.

I learned that the Cooke Castle was the stately limestone home built on Gibraltar Island in the 1800s. The old home was beautiful, but sorely in need of repairs. Being a lover of history and quality craftsmanship, I knew I could help in its preservation and restoration.

I didn’t give much, but what I did contribute made me feel good. I have been contributing to the Cooke Castle Restoration Fund 301508 ever since. My seemingly small contributions are combined with those of so many others, past, present and future, to support some of the things about OSU I value most.

Now I look forward to seeing how my contributions support these things, whether they be professional development scholarships, cash achievement awards or Cooke Castle renovations. I have also come to realize that if we don’t care enough about these things to give ourselves, how can we expect anyone else to do so?

I encourage you to find a cause that speaks to your heart…chances are there is a fund to support it. Then, give what you can and prepare yourself for the happiness that will result from knowing that you are helping others.

Celebrate Giving – Pancake Breakfast and Campaign Luncheon

Dear CFAES Faculty and Staff,

The end of March marked the halfway point for this year’s Campus Campaign. At this time, our participation rate is 28 percent, so we need to connect with only 306 more participants representing the various mission areas of the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences to reach our goal of 45 percent. We are very pleased with the number of people who have already made a commitment to the campaign; there is no doubt the students and others who benefit from these contributions are grateful.

Most likely many of you intend to contribute again this year, as you have for many years, but you have buried your Campus Campaign packet in the “to do” pile on your desk or just not gotten around to it yet. Please take a moment, right now, to unearth your pledge packet or go online to the Campus Campaign 2017  website and renew your support for the worthwhile things our students and colleagues are doing as part of The Ohio State University.

Finally, we have a couple of events for the Campus Campaign coming up on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, so please mark your calendars.

In Columbus, there will be a Pancake Breakfast from 8:00 – 9:30 a.m. in the Agricultural Administration Auditorium.

Later that day, a Campus Campaign Luncheon will be held in Wooster from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the Fisher Auditorium South Exhibit Area. We hope to see you at one of these events.

If you have questions or need additional info, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Greg Davis, CFAES Campus Campaign 2017 Co-chair
Thom Janini, CFAES Campus Campaign 2017 Co-chair
