elearning Update

Determined Engaging eLearning Propulsion (DEEP)

For this week’s report, I want to draw your attention to three items:

1.  ACEL has recently created a new position to help support their online efforts, with an application deadline of April 3.  Please spread the word and let Graham (cochran.99)  know of any questions or potential candidates.  Here are some details from Graham:

ACEL Graduate and eLearning Program Coordinator

Under the direction of the Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership (ACEL) Chair, this position serves as coordinator for the department’s graduate programs (M.S., M.Ed. & Ph.D. in Agricultural and Extension Education (AEE)) and supports departmental distance education and eLearning; coordinates logistics for marketing, recruitment, and application review for graduate students; works closely with and supports the Chair and the Director of Graduate Studies of ACEL with all graduate student services; serves as primary contact for AEE Online M.S. and as a liaison between Office of Distance Education and eLearning  (ODEE)  and ACEL; responsible for AEE Online M.S. recruitment, student services, program quality monitoring, and improvements; provides support for ACEL distance education and eLearning efforts in collaboration with department faculty, Extension program staff, designers, and IT specialists across the department, college, and ODEE; assists with the design and delivery of online courses/outreach programming within subject area of expertise.

More information and details on how to apply are available online on jobsatosu:

http://www.jobsatosu.com:80/postings/68978

2.  The CFAES eTeam held its spring webinar this past week.  The topic was on recording lectures, as well as creating and using video snipits in extension events or courses.  The recorded webinar is at: http://carmenconnect.osu.edu/p9eip99xf2r/

Ken Kulka (CFAES IT) was unable to attend due to an unexpected family emergency.  He’ll be recording information about CamRelay soon and we’ll share that link, as well.  Thanks to our second presenter, Preeti Palvankar, at ODEE who shared information about Media Site.

Many thanks to the eTeam and in particular, Meredith Luikart (HCS) who took the lead on planning, marketing, developing  and delivering this webinar event.  Amy Kohmetscher (ATI) also helped with planning and Valerie Childress (ATI) provided additional assistance with the delivery.

3.  In case you haven’t heard yet, OSU will be migrating away from Desire 2 Learn (Carmen) and to a new learning management system (Canvas).  Be in close contact with your department’s eTeam rep about further details.  You can request a training event from ODEE for your department to learn more about Canvas and how to move materials over.  I am exploring what needs we have within departments to make this move smooth.  Canvas has some great opportunities for us, so the temporary pain of moving will be well worth it.  Considerable research and testing was done before OSU made the final decision to switch LMS platforms.

Join us for an in-depth look at the rules that apply to data over the entire research life cycle. We’ll review the OSU Institutional Data Policy and take a case-based approach to investigate data types and their classifications, how they can be shared and stored as well as security and compliance issues. We will also discuss how this information should be integrated into federally-required data management plans.

We will answer questions such as:

  • In what ways can you and others interact with your data (who, when, where and how)?
  • What policies and people are available to guide your decisions?
  • How can you ensure that the data you collect is secure?
  • How can you safely manage sensitive information?(Which hosting services are okay to use?)
  • What should you do if you suspect the loss, unauthorized access, or exposure of institutional data?

This workshop is intended for all interested faculty, staff, and students. If you have any questions, please email Rebecca Chacko at chacko.9@osu.edu.

Student campus climate survey on sexual misconduct and relationship violence now open

A campus climate survey on sexual misconduct and relationship violence is now available to all students, and will remain open through April 20. Ensuring a safe and healthy campus climate for all members of the university community is Ohio State’s top priority. Faculty and staff are encouraged to be aware of the survey and to support students in completing the survey. Information collected will allow the university to inform and further enhance Buckeyes ACT, Ohio State’s comprehensive plan to combat sexual misconduct and relationship violence. Participation is voluntary, and once the survey is submitted, responses are completely anonymous. Results will be released in the fall.

Seed Grant Initiative – Sustainable and Resilient Economy (SRE)

The Sustainable and Resilient Economy (SRE) program has announced a Seed Grant Initiative to advance sustainability science in order to accelerate the development of sustainable and resilient production and consumption systems that enhance the value and reduce the adverse impacts of material flows through the economy and society. An important mechanism for achieving the above goals is to provide seed grants to Ohio State teams that wish to pursue promising opportunities in research, teaching, outreach, and practice.

Emphasis will be placed on funding proposals that are likely to produce tangible outputs that expand the financial or intellectual resources available to Ohio State. The first round of SRE seed grants was offered in the fall of 2016, and resulted in eight awards with a total value of $155,000. In addition, the successful proposals were able to secure a total of $173,000 in matching funds. We expect this second round to produce similar results.

SRE Seed Grant RFP Spring 2016 (003)

Specifics are detailed in the attached document.  The deadline for submission of the letter of intent is April 15, 2016 with full proposals due June 15, 2016. Please direct all communications to the SRE Program Coordinator, Melissa Amos (amos.126@osu.edu, 614-292-3732).

Learning Management System Update

Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues:

During the past year, nearly 4,000 faculty and students in more than 60 course sections participated in piloting a new learning management system (LMS) for Carmen.  We are grateful for their insightful feedback to support our continual goal of innovating our educational processes.  Based on input from your colleagues and students, we have clear direction to adopt Canvas (pending contract negotiations) as our new learning management system.

In addition to pilot participants, an LMS advisory committee and tens of technical assessment teams considered the merits of remaining with D2L or moving to Canvas. Throughout the pilots, faculty and students consistently rated Canvas as the stronger option. Faculty cited several superior features in Canvas: course and syllabus organization, content development, SpeedGrader, and management of group assignments. Students cited the calendar, course organization, and mobility as invaluable Canvas features.

A member of our advisory committee spoke eloquently about the value of our LMS:

The right LMS is an opportunity to motivate, energize, and even inspire students. It can stimulate the imagination of faculty, and encourage more creative instructional design. It can provide deep analytics, and reveal insights into how well our students, and we, are progressing. It can create new connections and build communities of learning. Yet, we realize these additional benefits only if we adopt a platform that goes beyond what is merely functional and familiar.

Transitioning to a new system will generate concerns about how and when to proceed, and we are committed to providing you with flexibility and support during this multi-term transition. During the coming weeks, the Office of Distance Education and eLearning will contact your department to provide details and answer any questions. In the meantime, please visit the Canvas Adoption Site to learn more.

Thank you for your direction in providing an improved Carmen experience. We look forward to supporting you through a smooth transition in the coming year.

Sincerely,

Bruce A. McPheron
Interim Executive Vice President
and Provost
