CFAES Communications is now using Drupal as the main platform for our college websites and we are currently working to migrate our college’s large web presence to Drupal. With more and more website editors now working in Drupal 7, we’ve dedicated the blog on our training website to support and update those users on. National Farmers Market Week August 2-8

Celebrate NFMW newsletter article to stakeholders

2015 National Farmers Market Week Proclamation

National Farmers Market Week (August 2 – 8, 2015) is a week-long celebration of our nation’s farmers markets, the farmers and ranchers who make them possible, and the communities that host them. This year marks the 16th Annual National Farmers Market Week recognizing the important role that farmers markets play in our local food economies.

To promote National Farmers Market Week, we encourage farmers market managers and community leaders to plan an event at their local farmers market during the week. It is a great way to show why we love the farmers, vendors and the customers that make the market great!

Attached is a high resolution copy of the proclamation issued by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. USDA will issue a press release later this month with a link to the proclamation. AMS wanted to give you an advanced copy to share with your stakeholders in support of National Farmers Market Week.

USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) Administrator Anne Alonzo will kick-off National Farmers Market Week on Saturday, August 1, 2015, at the Santa Fe Farmers Market in New Mexico. AMS will also host a special event the USDA Farmers Market on Friday, August 7th, held just outside the USDA Headquarters in Washington, DC.

The celebration can be shared on social media with the #FarmMktWk [hashtag] on Twitter @USDA_AMS and facebook.com/USDA.

If you have already planned a special event for National Farmers Market Week, please pass on this information to other businesses and organizations who would enjoy celebrating our farmers, ranchers and producers that are bringing fresh, local food to our communities and the consumers that support them!

Contact Peter Wood, AMS Public Affairs Office; telephone: 202-720-6179 for more information.

BuckeyeBox, DropBox and TeamViewer

Applications and services that are not purchased or licensed by Ohio State, including those freely available on the internet, may not meet university standards for privacy, data security, intellectual property protection, and records retention. Many existing third-party providers have not entered into university agreements with Ohio State, and thus their products cannot and should not be used with university data or university-owned computing resources. (https://ocio.osu.edu/policy/standards/cloud)

In early 2013, Ohio State established a formal relationship with Box.net to offer faculty, staff and students an easy way to share files and folders online through a university branded solution called BuckeyeBox, which many in the university population are already currently using. CFAES pays for this service centrally and makes it available to you at no cost. BuckeyeBox is the only approved Ohio State cloud collaboration tool. (https://ocio.osu.edu/blog/community/2015/02/17/do-you-know-about-buckeyebox).

In light of this, CFAES is moving forward to ensure that university data is not moving to or through unauthorized third-party providers. In the days ahead, ITS staff will be actively assisting Dropbox users to migrate their process to BuckeyeBox and remove the Dropbox software from our environment throughout the months of July and August.

Additionally, CFAES will also be actively removing the application for TeamViewer from our environment throughout the months of July and August. TeamViewer is an application that can potentially provide unauthorized remote access to computing resources within our environment, and as such, presents a significant risk to machine security as well as licensing problems.

If you need assistance getting signed up and using BuckeyeBox or have questions regarding this process, contact your local IT support personnel or the ITS help desk at (614) 292-9110 for Columbus or (330) 263-3772 for Wooster.

Visit from Gates Foundation Program Officer

Brad Zamft Flyer

Dr. Brad Zamft, a program officer in the Discovery and Translational Sciences Division of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is working to imagine, identify, and invest in technologies to fundamentally shift how drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics are created for those most in need. His current focus is on developing tools to investigate the host-pathogen interactions that make diarrhea so devastating to children in low income countries.

Dr. Zamft will give a broad overview of the Gates Foundation and how metrics and projects are defined, and discuss his current focus on improving childhood diarrhea morbidity and mortality through applied biology. Dr. Zamft will also discuss his previous research at Harvard Medical School, which aimed to create a genetically encoded and therefore scalable neural recording device, as well as his work as a DOE ARPA-E Fellow, where he worked on a variety of projects including self-healing infrastructure, precision agriculture and biofuel production.

The talk titled “Adventures in Applied Biology: Molecular Ticker Tapes, Self-Healing Roads, Global Health, and More” will take place on July 23, 2015, at 10 a.m. in Room E001 Scott Laboratory.

Please forward as appropriate. Thank you.

College Space Planning

The college is in the process of reconciling its facility inventory with university records and we are requesting your assistance. In essence, some of our records need to be updated.

During the coming weeks, the college planning office will be touring buildings on Columbus and Wooster campuses. We will be updating our architectural floor plans and reconciling our current space allocation with university records. The information will be used to reconcile and hopefully lower POMs on the Columbus campus, and will benefit our planning efforts when future capital improvement projects come along.

Building tours will be non-disruptive process and will be coordinated through building contacts. We appreciate your patience and cooperation. Thanks.
