Student Leadership Advocates Retreat

Following joining Student Leadership Advocates (SLA), I was invited to attend their semesterly retreat in Hocking Hills, OH. This was probably one of the most fun retreats I have ever attended.

Almost everyone is familiar with that nervous feeling you get right before you meet a room of new faces. “Will the like me?”, “Will I make new friends”, and “Hopefully they don’t see me nervous sweating” are some of the familiar thoughts that run through our nervous minds. Like an mere mortal, I was pretty nervous about the whole ordeal. However, SLA proved once again to be so unique and special. Since SLA is a cohort, no one is senior to anyone else. The room was simply a group of individuals that wants to be cohesive and cohesive is what we became.

Throughout the weekend, we learned a series of different facilitations, set goals for the year, and split into different committees. I joined the Marketing Committee.

My favorite memory from the weekend, is when the first year SLAs were headed to a different cabin to do a workshop. However, the lodge we were staying at had a funky drive way to say the least. the lodge sat on top of a hill and the lodge exit sat on another hill. Between the two hills was a small drive way and ravines on either side. Since the parking lot was so congested and I was the last one into the parking lot, I had to load up my car and drive down and back up the drive way backwards! The other SLAs in my car noted it was like fast and furious. Nothing like near death experience to bond a group!
