Peer Advising

At the Fisher College of Business, each incoming student completes a Business Survey class to get them up to speed on what to expect. This class is taught be a full-time advisor as well as a current student to provide a peer’s perspective. During Autumn 2016, I worked as a Peer Advisor to 120 students within 4 different class sessions. We explored different major offerings, how to schedule for class, and much more. I taught the transfer student sessions, which was a huge learning opportunity for me. As transfer students, they are on a much quicker timeline to get involved and to get internships before they graduate. I was amazed by the wide array of backgrounds of my students. I had students from the military, with families, and other commitments.

3 years of school later, I can’t remember every piece of my Freshman year. However, I can remember my Peer Advisor and the impact he made on my college journey. This strong experience is what encouraged me to apply to be a Peer Advisor to other students. While the experience was trying at times, it was well worth it. Through my work, I hope I have impacted a few more incoming student just the way my Peer Advisor did to me. The following anonymous feedback after teaching leads me to believe that I may have done just that:

“She was able to show us how a well rounded student can come out of Fisher. She was a great resource and she was a great person to talk to about classes or becoming a peer advisor.  Great person!”

“She was always very upbeat and prepared during class. She made the information very relatable and interesting even though it was just standard information.”

“A bright spot in my week with her humor and important, relevant information”

“Hannah was a really great peer advisor, always seemed excited to be at class even on a Friday afternoon and gave great advice”
