One subject Honors Cohort explored was Lustron. For those who do not know, Lustron was a housing corporation that strived to solve the serious housing crisis after World War 2 with steel homes. To my surprise, Lustron was actually headquartered in Ohio. As such, there is a huge exhibit of a Lustron home at the Ohio History Center.
For one of our projects, were we able to visit the museum and explore life back in that time period. While in the Lustron home, we met Grandpa, a historical interpreter. It was so fascinating to hear his recount of life in a steel home. This experience taught me so much about the impact government has on business and visa versa. I also came to realize how tricky it is to get an innovative idea off the ground.
While this learning experience was more unorthodox compared to usual college teaching practices, I learned to question the face value of things on my own. I was able to decide for myself if steel homes was an effective idea and if the government was ethical in pulling the plug or if there were ulterior motives.
